They say change is good

Did you notice? there wasn’t a danger garden blog post yesterday, and yet the earth still turned. The sun came up, the sun went down. I had a little extra time.

I’ve dipped my foot in this water before—that is cutting back from posting here on a Mon-Fri schedule. Something always pulled me back though, mainly the fact I had so many topics and photos that I wanted to write about and share—I do love writing about gardening and sharing my passion. No doubt that COVID drastically curtailed my garden travels, and with that topics I’ve been able to cover have been less “far reaching”. There’s also been a steady decline of traffic here, on the blog—while interactions on Instagram (short as they are) seem to be growing.

All to say I’m pulling back to a more random posting schedule, maybe Mon, Wed, Fri. Maybe more some weeks, maybe less others—as the mood strikes. More when there’s more, less when there’s less, or other things vying for my time.

This also seems like a good time to break the news that Blogger (parent company Google) has announced they’re discontinuing the follow by email feature, in their words: the email subscription service will be discontinued in July 2021. After July 2021, your feed will still continue to work, but the automated emails to your subscribers will no longer be supported

Which is to say if you currently get alerts of new danger garden blog posts via email, they’ll be stopping in July. You might be tempted to think I’ve stopped posting entirely, but that won’t be the case. You’ll just have to visit thedangergarden.com to see the latest. You could also use a service like Netvibes (https://www.netvibes.com), as a blog reader, I use it and I love it—and it's free!

Change... it's a good thing, right? Oh and speaking of change, Andrew got me out of the house and away from working in the garden last Sunday. These photos were all taken up near Trillium Lake (hence the trillium), here in Oregon. It was wonderful to get out in the wild again. I highly recommend it.

  1. Change is the only constant, but that doesn't mean that every change is beneficial...that said, I visit this website M-F. Look forward to your posts. Do not Instagram/Tweet/FB and do not intend to so I hope you keep posting your good stuff RIGHT HERE!

    1. Thank you for your continued visits and comments. Right here is where it all started and where my heart still is. Long form, lots of photos, random musings. All the good stuff will continue to show up here!

    2. Loree:

I'm so glad to hear that you are not giving up on your site.

In actuality, your Post inspired me to do one about how the 'Net has changed since I first was inspired to become a web designer...way back in 1998...

  2. I subscribe via Feedly, so I probably don't show up as a site visitor.

It is classic (frustrating) Google to discontinue a service for no particular reason. The graveyard of discontinued Google services is vast.

    1. I still remember how devastated I was when they killed their blog reader. It was so easy! Then of course there was the trashing of Picasa and the fact they just "lost" all of my stored blog photos (or at least my ability to download hi res versions). I still can't believe they've kept Blogger for as long as they have, although the last software update was so lame it almost drove me away.

  3. I pretty much agree with "M" as I only follow blogs and not much other social media. That said, I have obviously cut back on my own blog so I know how you feel. I am partly sticking with the blog because of the Madison Fling next spring. But I am finding it harder to blog myself and keep up with faves and actually get gardening done. Even if I stop blogging I will probably maintain the site for a while in order to figure out how to permanently save long form posts that I like.

    1. I just visited your site. Are you in the UK?

      And those Ladyslipper Orchids. Outside!!!

      Have bookmarked you!

    2. I so enjoy your posts Linda and can't imagine not getting to read about what you're up to! As for the Madison Fling I do hope to attend... which would mean we could finally meet and I could see your garden!

  4. I did notice! I wondered if you'd elected to pull back or whether Blogger had experienced another meltdown of the sort that impacted me last Friday. I find myself slowly increasing what I post on Instagram but, although I briefly considered abandoning the blog after last Friday's fiasco, I still prefer blogs to IG as the posts are both more comprehensive and more readily searchable. The pandemic has, and to some extent continues, to impact the availability of new content, though.

    1. Instagram will never replace the blog for the archival nature of what my garden was and what it's become. For my journey as a gardener, however for random communication it's pretty sweet. But yes, things like last week's hiccup as well as the email to subscribers change serve to remind me that it can all go away in an instant.

  5. It amazes me that you are able to write so much about plants, gardens and nurseries.

You must do what you feel is best for you.

I prefer reading your posts and looking at your photos on this site rather than Instagram. it is easier to looks through your historic posts. Instragram does not provide that facility.

Some other plant forums that I used to post regularly have gone onto facebook and I gave up on them. I am not a fab of facebook.

I come to your blog almost daily. I don't always comment, but I do always read and look at your photos. Like the commenter above, I don't do FB, Instagram, or Twitter. I also probably never will. I do, however, understand your need to cut back. Regardless, I'll still take a peek at your blog daily to see if you've posted something new. I enjoy it too much to stop. Thanks!

  7. Oooh, that Blogger. Well, we're in the same predicament. Kudos for going with the flexible posting route with your Danger Garden blog posts. I do love your daily posts, however, and look forward to them. I had to cut back mine to every other week during the busy spring season, there are just too darned many chores that scream for attention. Whatever you decide I'll follow you to the moon and back.

Hi Loree - I do read your blog M - F. Like others have commented I don't do other forms of social media. But as time passes unfortunately everything changes, including all of us.

  9. I've been to Trillium Lake, one of the few places in your area I got to visit once (my sons were at snowboarding camp at Hood).
Kind of a bummer about not getting email notices anymore from you (and Kris) as I'm not on Blogger. Change happens!

  10. With it being gardening season I don't always catch your posts the day they are released but I do read every one. You have been phenomenal during this pandemic to keep finding interesting material to blog about. I sue your 'blogs I read' to keep track of others who post as well. I think Blogger is crazy to stop the email alerts. However, will always check in. Thanks for doing what you do.

    1. You have been a steady commenter and I appreciate that. I almost feel like I know you as we "converse" so often. I don't understand why Blooger/Google feels the need to make this change...

  11. I'm one of those who reads all your emails but rarely goes to your blog website. I had no idea that made me an invisible follower so thanks for the education. I'm not a fan of Instagram but will follow you wherever you go.

  12. Yeah, the Feedly thing. Grrr! Surprised they have not shut down blogger yet, or started charging for it. All good things must pass.

But lovely Trilliums. I hope they are around for a long, long, long time.

    1. I share your surprise that they haven't decided to do away with Blogger, although I've been paying for awhile now sine I reached my free limit for photo "storage" (don't get me started on their "storage") a while back.

  13. Hopefully there will always be a place to share photography with written word content. Blogs are so well suited to this. Who knows what kind of technology will emerge in the next several years?

  16. Oh Google... why mess with something that works?? Wordpress has apparently decided that commenting is no longer an option. I don't recall changing any settings, so I don't know what's up, and I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Glad you got up to the lake for a bit.

  19. You have me totally hooked with the lavender coloured trillium ! What is the name of it ? I have the usual white, red, yellow and purple .. but lavender nope! .. Yes .. Google is dropping a few things .. I haven't even tried to figure that one out .. I don't have a lot of visitors so I don't think there will be a huge impact ? LOL .. I know what you mean about being in the "wild" a bit .. I could use an East coast forest walk along the sea .. now that would refresh my soul.

  20. I'm with you. I could post every day, re: love to write, interesting topics, etc. But it does take some time and sometimes it's nice to have a more laid-back schedule. Honestly, I don't know how you did it so frequently. You must be faster with the photo uploads, etc. Re: the "follow by email" situation, I'm trying to figure out what to do with that. Thanks for the ideas. Beautiful Trilliums!
