Sedum obtusifolium, who knew?

It's a special day when I discover a new to me plant at my fingertips AND it's something I want to grow. May I present Sedum obtusifolium...

I do not recall ever laying eyes on this beauty. What attracted me was the fact it looks much less hardy than the Zone 3 temperatures it's said to be hardy to, and it's evergreen!

Reading the description on the back of the plant label I admit I got a laugh out of its recommended planting companions. How could I not buy one, or two?

The fact the photo on the label and nearly every photo online features the flowers over the foliage does concern me. Since I brought home a pair we'll see how they hold up long term. If the flowers actually cover the foliage they may just get cut off, or thinned...

  1. Funny that I'd happen to be looking info up for it on the DAY you post this. It's a neat and kind of weird Sedum (now Phedimus obtusifolius) that looks a bit like Pinguicula at first glance. I think that z3 hardiness is VERY optimistic; z5 is more realistic.

  2. Wow, I'd never have guessed this is a sedum. Yes, I would TOTALLY plant this if I could find it. I've never even heard of it! I think there are still many surprises waiting for us in the genus Sedum and related genera like Petrosedum, Rhodiola etc.

    1. Well if you have any nearby nurseries that carry plants from Blooming Nursery (purple can) you might check.

  3. Very cool. I like pink flowers but I too would pluck them off if they covered this cool foliage!

  4. Neat plant. Maybe even hardy for me in my zone. I have a large collection of different types of sedum. Given lots of sun, neglect and very well drained soil they go nuts here. Interesting comment form Nick so time will tell.

    1. Neglect seems to be an important part of the care regime.

  5. That's one I've never seen nor heard of either. Regrettably, Sedums in general don't do particularly well here. Graptosedums are more reliable for me.

    1. Well Kris... you can't have all the succulents!

  6. Wow cool sedum! Agree with Gerhard - is it really a sedum? I can think of many things to group it with.

    1. Well according to nick it may not be, looks like it's been moved to Phedimus obtusifolius.

  7. It's strange, at least to me, that with such fantastic foliage, the tags still highlights the rather unimpressive pink blooms.
