In a Vase on Monday...oh the riches!

The "problem" with participating in this Monday vase ritual is that you get used to having fresh cut stems from the garden around the house. Then when you get busy (or go out of town) and they all pass their prime (and must be tossed) things suddenly feel empty and dreary. What's a blogger to do but head out to the garden to see what's available...

And oh my! Tis the season of abundance, there is so much going on in the garden right now it's difficult to even know where to start.

After looking around a bit I decided to start with Lupinus albifrons. Their spires are so tall, and stems so thin, that any little bit of rain flops them over...and the day that I did the cutting it was going to rain hard. I have three plants so I could spread out the cutting among them.

Looking at the Euphorbia polychroma and the Hakonechloa next I decided to go with a chartreuse and blue/purple combination.

And cut a few of the Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' flower clusters.

Here's the first arragement...

I can't remember where I picked up the vase, I've had it for years.

My mom recently bought the same vase with this fabulous label still on it...(I'm kind of jealous)...

The second vase was a gift from my parents, purchased at the same antiques shop where she bought her vase.

I love how the dark lines in the Hakonechloa echo the vase color.

And although I grow the Lupinus albifrons for it's foliage I am enjoying the flowers.

I matched the two vases up with a chartreuse Bauer pot with gravel and Tillandsia...

And they went on the dining table.

A note about the color. To the eye the Lupine blooms are purple, deep violet purple. Since the camera makes them look blue I thought maybe if I found something that shade of blue it would trick the camera into showing the flowers their actual color. Nope. That was a fail. These things are not the same color in "real life"...

So that's what I came up with this week, click on over to Rambling in the Garden for links to all the bloggers creating arrangements from their garden cuttings.

  1. Oh the contrast with the zingy green is fantastic, and I especially like the dark green vase and its contents. Showing the three containers as a trio works really well - great idea. Thanks for sharing

    1. Thanks Cathy. I just redid what I had in the chartreuse pot and like it so much better...one big Tillandsia instead of three small.

  2. Oh my what a stunning display of color...it seems to be a theme this week...purples/blues and bright green or yellow. Love the lupines...mine will be out in a few weeks in my meadow!

  3. The vases are beautiful but what I really love is the 2nd image showing the wonderful plant combos in situ in the garden. Twenty degrees above normal here so things are exploding but not in time for a vase. The spring ephemerals are going to be very ephemeral!

  4. You are a master of floral-foliage vignettes, Loree! And my envy of your vase collection knows no bounds. Seeing the lupine, I think I really should try it again - mine was literally consumed by a horrid mass of shiny black beetles. It's the blue I wanted in my back border but didn't get from Lupinus propinquus.

    1. Yikes, I hope no horrid masses of black beetles show up here! Hoov asked for seeds, so if I'm able to send her some maybe she'll have so much success that there will be plants to share!

    2. Annie's currently has that lupine available but, alas, the wind is desiccating every plant in sight and there's no rain in the foreseeable future - it's not a good time to plant.

  5. Blue/purple and chartreuse are such a great combination and you've made it even better with the cool vases!

  6. The green vase is spectacular...and I like the contents too. Every camera seems to have a blind spot for one color or another. My last one could do nothing with white. This one has trouble with red.

    1. Odd isn't it? I really thought getting something else in the image was going to do the trick.

  7. Beautiful, beautiful. Blue/chartreuse are perfection.

I wonder may I bother you for some seeds of the Lupine? Can't find the plant here...(if it is a bother, don't bother, I know seeds can be annoying.)
