Ask the locals, my visit to Living Green at Le Souk
When Andrew and I started planning our trip to the Bay Area I emailed Kelly (head planner for the SF GB Fling, garden designer, and all around great lady) to ask about places I should see, maybe there was something she'd wanted to include in the SF Fling that there just wasn't time for? Yes indeed, I'm glad I did. Living Green at Le Souk was just one of the places she told me about...
This is not a place where you casually pick up a thing or two to take home. No, this is a destination for when you need just the thing to complete your estate garden. Of course I was in heaven...
You would have been too, right?
*sigh*
Imagine pointing..."I'll take that, and that, oh and do you have two of those?"
Two of those? Why yes, we do!
Three even...
Old, heavily scrolled and worked was happy right next to new, sleek and modern.
And there was plenty of color.
Or not. If you prefer.
I wanted it all...

I'm stowing away with you and Andrew on your next trip. What did you come home with, Miss Danger?
ReplyDeleteNothing from this stop, however I didn't return empty handed:

Oh là là! Those floral scroll work pots, that Thai temple, and those PLANTS! The minute I get an estate garden, I'll be visiting this place! For a moment, I thought I'd had a stroke or something but then realized that the drool running down my face was from seeing so much cool stuff! Love this place!
ReplyDeleteI can see a lot of this working wonderfully in your garden Peter.
DeleteDear God in heaven, I want those terra cotta chairs. That's just for starters. Thank you and amen.
ReplyDeleteI hope he answers.
DeleteFabulous nursery! When I saw it, I thought this is the nursery Loree would have if she had a nursery, though possibly with less statuary and more plants.
ReplyDeleteHave you been there Kris?
DeleteIn addition to the fabulous plants, those wheel-like things and the Javanese/Balinese statues are especially fabulous! I'll take three of each in assorted sizes, please!
ReplyDeleteWhere will you put them?
DeleteOh man! I love it all--even the items that aren't "right" for my garden. Those big, weighty pots in the first couple of photos make commonly available (and totally acceptable) pots look like kitsch.
ReplyDeleteI know right? And just exactly how does one go about getting those home I wonder?
DeleteNice! I'll put it on my list of places to visit next time I'm in SF. The only problem would be wanting to buy items that wouldn't fit or couldn't be transported back in my luggage. Great place! Thanks for the tour!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that it was all so big and heavy kind of made my visit even better, I didn't have to waste any energy thinking about what I wanted, it was all just a fantasy.
DeleteI'm glad this place is safely 2000 miles away by car, with a huge mountain range between it and me. Usually I'm not one to drool over garden "decor" (that's not quite the right word in this case), but I easily saw 20 things that I'd put into my garden without hesitation -- and that was just on the first quick glance over these photos!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you visited and shared!
Glad you enjoyed it Alan, definitely a one-of-a-kind place.
DeleteThose clam shells were eye candy for me. But so much more. Ah yes to be rich and just point and say that one! Another destination in S.F. to go to.
ReplyDeleteI hope you make it there Candy.
DeleteLooks like a great place! So what is that wavy thing that there were three of? Did you buy anything? I would have been in heaven too.
ReplyDeleteAgave gypsophila, I believe. And no, I didn't buy a thing!
DeleteOr...if you don't happen to know any locals...ask Loree! I'll be in touch before we head that way (or any way). The "sleek and modern" planter looks a lot like the ones at the Best garden, designed by the owner. Ya think?
ReplyDeleteGood point, it does look like them. Coincidence or inspiration?
Delete(and yes, I'd be happy to share destination ideas with you, anytime!)
Loving those terracotta chairs. Really cool..
ReplyDeleteI wonder how heavy they are, I didn't even think to see.
DeleteSince you didn't mention PRICE I assume it's the kind of place where it's in bad taste to ask how much things costs?
ReplyDeletePrice aside, yes, I'd gladly drive a truck there and load it full of goodies. Gotta make a trip to SF and check out this place and Flora Grubb.
The only price I made note of was on the huge crated agave in the second photo (with the interesting label Agave Soledad ('Soledad' guiengola x attenuata)) and it was $687.50 I stopped looking at the prices after that.
DeleteThis place is right near Flora Grubb so yes, you'll need to visit both!
Well, that's SF for you. Lots of high tech millionaires with lots of money to spend. But you know what, I was just as happy today planting my $10 Agave colorata from the Ruth Bancroft Garden :-).
DeleteHeavenly alright with all those beautiful things for the garden! Big budget a must but it's also a perfect place to buy that one statement piece for the garden (or two).
ReplyDeleteI see a couple of things that would look lovely near your "new" jungle hut!
DeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteNext time you're in the area...
DeleteWow, something for everyone! Was that banksia in a pot? Wish mine had a nice trunk like that. Gosh I'm impatient.
ReplyDeleteYes I believe it was, and I'm right there with you on the impatience thing.
DeleteOh, dear, where to start? How about with a bad joke for picture #9? Baby got Banksia! That looks like it was a big bunch of flowers! The wooden statue in the 11th picture sent me into a laughing fit. I looked down form the movie I was watching and it looked like the statue was vomiting out the weeping conifer in front of it! The green walls in 12 and 21 are gorgeous tapestries of foliage and the rusty, twisted metal flowers caught my eye.
ReplyDeleteGlad your sense of humor was engaged with the post.
DeleteI could have spent all day there and left penniless with a UHaul full of stuff.
ReplyDeleteOh but just think of how much fun you would have, and how great your garden would look...
DeleteHeaven. Yes.
ReplyDeleteThose aren't garden accessories you'd find just anywhere. I'd have had a blast window shopping there too.
