Did hell just freeze over?

It must have because there is a rose blooming in my garden, a rose I planted! Even more strange, I love it! Not as much as I love it’s wicked red thorns but I do love it’s simple shape and crisp white petals. (Rosa sericea pteracanthaaka, 'Wingthorn Rose')

  1. Very fitting for a Danger Garden--the thorns I mean. The flower, well that's a bonus.

  2. Love, love, love this rose! I first saw it in the garden of the late, Stephen Antonow, located in West Seattle.

I saw it again at Far Reaches Farm. Kelly and Sue had Rosa sericea ssp. omeiensis f. pteracantha sited so the afternoon sun lit up the thorns! Just amazing.

Another plant I have to add to my "Must Have" list.

  3. It never occurred to me that it would also BLOOM. Well, of course: a rose is a rose.

  5. Ha ha! Now that you have realized that you like one rose flower, you have to start investigating the rest of the genus. Many of the species roses are very nice, with refined, understated flowers against a backdrop of vicious thorns. What could be better? R. rubrifolia has some of the loveliest foliage you've ever seen, and R. eglanteria isn't so much visually, but the leaves are wonderfully fragrant, and can scent an entire garden. And I defy even you to dislike the rich, deep color of'Basye's Purple'

  6. I was going to say now you need R. rubrifolia, but greensparrow beat me to it.

  7. Lovely bloom and thorns-actually your shots make the whole, thing look like a "spiky plant"! So it fits right in.

  8. Grace, agreed.

Van, I tried to come up with a spot where I would get the thorns backlit with the evening sun. No luck...instead I get the morning sun which is almost as nice.

ricki, yep. I was worried that it would be a huge drawback and I would have to cut them off just like with the Hosta...but as I said, I kind of like them.

    Bianca, like stained glass!

Greensparrow, oh now you're just talking crazy talk! Those bloom pink! That's just too sweet for me...but I'll admit that 'Basye's Purple' is a pretty excellent color.

    Denise, ditto...pink.

Nicole, it is all about the spikes, of course.

  9. It's a very special "danger garden" worthy rose and I bet it would get decapitated if it were anything other than white or black, right, White Danger Queen?
