Wednesday Vignette; an opuntia of many colors

On any regular day this big mass of opuntia is pretty fabulous, however in bloom, well, it's an opuntia of many colors...

Any plant that has yellow and orange flowers at the same time is spectacular.

Then you throw in the fact they turn pink when they've closed and things get really wild.

I am rather jealous.

  1. That is pretty amazing look: opuntia of many colors. I bet it would look great with the fruit all over. I wonder if they harvest it.

    1. I do recall seeing the fruit in the past, it is also quite colorful.

  2. That's an impressive stand even before the beautiful blooms are taken into consideration. Wonder if originally there were two plants with different coloured flowers that have now merged into one clump.

    1. That's an interesting idea, but I believe it's an age thing. The flowers start off one color and then "fade" to another. There are a couple of pads you can see have multiple colors blooming on them.

  3. Ooh, that's MASSIVE! And a little like Rosa mutabilis with all the color progressions.

  4. Love the different colors. Have a yellow and red one and neighbor has a yellow one, we are going to trade a few pads.

  5. The are fantastic! I grew up in San Diego and one of our houses had a hill of opuntia, fond memories.

    1. It's on Killingsworth, just east of 15th Ave if my memory is correct. On the north side of the street.

  8. Quite a sight. My O. phaeacantha does that on a much smaller scale. Good to see it elsewhere. I'm not sure if I noticed it before.
