On Instagram? You should be following @planty_magoo

Are you on Instagram? If the answer is no, why the heck not? It's a fabulous place for gathering inspiration and learning about new plants. I resisted for a long while, but since jumping in several years ago absolutely love it. Today I want to recommend that if you are on Instagram, you should follow my friend Max Cannon, aka @plantymagoo. Why? Because you'll see creative ideas like this fan-cage repurposed as a hanging planter...

Or perhaps this is more your style?

Yep, that's a trashcan lid! Max credited me for this one but I say he was being overly generous. I've used lids as planters placed on top of various pillars and supports, but never hanging like this, that was all his idea...and isn't it fantastic?

You'll also see all sorts of jealousy-inspiring garden photography—Max and his husband Justin garden in the mild East Bay area of California and they have great plant taste too...

Finally, if you're a hummingbird lover you'll really appreciate all the stellar photos of these cute little guys that show up on his page.

Get on over there and follow @plantymagoo already!

  1. Oh well, I'm one of those not on Instagram. (Yet?)
I believe that all creative ideas should be shared to nourish everyone's imagination and spirit. More sharing spurs more creativity, as the use of a garbage lid demonstrates.
That curly, red-splotched bromeliad is gorgeous.

  2. I follow planty_magoo as well, and have recommended it to two friends. I'd recommend it to others but those are the only two local friends I have on IG (other than those of you who made it there before me of course).

    1. I find it so interesting what explodes with comments and other interactions on Insta vs. here on the blog. They're definitely different audiences.

  3. Thanks for sharing--I'm now following Planty Magoo and I've grown to love the combination of relaxation and inspiration I get from following all you talented gardeners on Instagram. It's been the most peaceful preoccupation I've found over the last 4-5 months. Well, next to gardening, of course! I do like repurposing garbage can lids as succulent gardens when the cans themselves are growing tomatoes, but I haven't tried hanging one yet!

    1. Excellent use of the cans, growing tomatoes! Glad you're enjoying Instagram, it usually comes without the political "stuff" you find on Facebook so that keeps it easier to enjoy.
