This has been a strange holiday season. First of all, we were supposed to be out of town over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Then I was scheduled to travel again—gone for 4 days the following week. When would I put up the tree and the trimmings? Maybe I wouldn't? Hmmm ...I hadn't really thought about it.
Then the Thanksgiving trip was cancelled shortly before we were due to leave, suddenly I had the time to decorate, but no plan. What would I do for a tree? Nothing creative came to mind. When in doubt, there's always the vintage aluminium tree...
But first, let's talk wreaths. If you read this blog you know I love making wreaths. Last year I spent a day with friends putting together several. This year that same invitation was received, but I wasn't able to make the gathering. Luckily back in July—for my birthday—my friend Erin had given me a huge "flocked" wreath. I hung it up but then decided it needed a little embellishing. Dried protea were added.
Along with a big brown ribbon...
...and a vintage Christmas postcard. This hangs on our front door.
The protea don't stop at the door, however.
Andrew and I were admiring the flowers at New Seasons and there were two big luscious protea blooms left, I said we couldn't rationalize buying them both. Overhearing us, the florist said she'd make us a deal; the pair for $10. Naturally we couldn't refuse an offer like that. So, pink for Christmas!
Here's my attempt at jolly making. We got a new sofa a couple of weeks ago and the ottoman hasn't arrived yet. They living room feels bare.
The mantle, left to right...
I pinched the begonia leaves the day we were supposed to get a freeze. The plants outside still look great, but now I'm enjoying them indoors as well.
I'll wrap up this look at the holiday decor with a little mood lighting courtesy of a sunny morning...

Silver looks so good with all the green bits (and the new sofa). The pink protea is just the touch of color the room needed. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you!
DeletePerfect. I like wreaths, too. The dried AND the blooming Protea (Proteas?) are fabulous. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThank you Beth!
DeleteIt looks so beautiful! Seriously, magazine-worthy, your entire living room! Merry Christmas to the pair of you!
ReplyDeleteAh shucks....
DeleteLooks fabulous. Can't wait to see the new ottoman. I'm on the hunt for a big round one. Remember that giant orange leather guy they had at Schoolhouse a few years ago? I think it came in blue as well. Something like that. So far though, no luck. Love your creativity. So gorgeous and inspiring. Happy Merry Impeachmas. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh it’s nothing fancy, the ottoman, it just matches the sofa. And yes, I do remember the orange one at Schoolhouse. I LOVED that thing.
DeleteYou probably know I never decorate for Christmas any more. I'm very much in favor of a stress-free Christmas where if you don't have time to decorate, then you just don't, no worries. But, you done good, especially considering you pulled it all together quickly with no plan. Hope you have a great Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI had a strange dream last night about Protea flowers. They were flowering straight up out of the ground in some garden I was visiting, like the lights you sometimes see embedded in a walkway. So freaky.
There are banksia flowers that do that...maybe that’s what you were dreaming about? I hope you and Nigel enjoy your holiday.
DeleteLooks fabulous - I love your decorating style, Loree. Merry Christmas to you both!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Eliza, Merry Christmas to you!
DeleteUnplanned it may have been but your tableau came together beautifully, Loree. I'm surprised at how much a like that silver tree and the wreath is over-the-top gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words Kris!
DeleteYou have really inspired me to do a bit more mantle-scaping. I have a very static and boring situation going on over the fireplace. I always enjoy each iteration you share. Have a great Christmas Loree !
ReplyDeleteHave fun with that KS! I’m m already planning the after Christmas version...
DeleteEven if you feel like your livingroom is a bit empty it appears to be full of Christmas joy. Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteLove your 'living' mantel! I've never thought about adding plants to the Christmas mantel. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteYour decorations are simple, elegant, warm and intriguing. Every year they are different, and they always make me smile!
ReplyDeleteWe can count on you to bring Christmas Spirit into our dull old computer screens. Happy Holidays to you...and no, I'm not afraid of "Merry Christmas" it's just that I am a bit late for that.
