You'd be forgiven if you thought my camera was pointed at the exuberant green roof, at Portland Nursery, but it wasn't.
Instead it was this Equisetum hyemale (horsetail) in a saucer, that I was focused on.
So happy, and so little soil...

I've never grown this, so I wouldn't know anything about conditions it likes. I was warned against it early on when we moved here. I should try it in a pot, because when contained it is a beautiful plant. This is different from the one that grows at the side of the road everywhere, that turns into large brushes?
ReplyDeleteI used to have a stock-tank full until I decided that space would be better suited to ferns. It's a fabulous (but invasive) plant. And yes the one that looks like a large brush is different, Equisetum telmateia.
DeleteLove the roof but warned early on not to put horsetail in our pond. So I just admire it from afar.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that would be a mess!
DeleteThat plant clearly wants to live!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty amazing but I suspect it wants a good deal of water even if it can do without much soil.
ReplyDeleteVery thirsty!
DeleteThat and the cockroaches will be around long after our species is gone.
ReplyDeleteWhat a combination!
DeleteThat's definitely a survivor! Ours always looked messy and eventually it had to go.
ReplyDeleteEven in a pot it can be dangerous. I think you don't want any holes for it to creep out the bottom. It's very sculptural and lures people in but it can be a fatal mistake.
ReplyDelete"It's very sculptural and lures people in but it can be a fatal mistake"...sounds like a carnivorous plant!
DeleteHaha - what Hoov said made me nod. She is absolutely right! That plant is a sculptural marvel. I have one in a watertight pot, but quite frankly, it scares me a little. Someone told me they also spread by spores.... yowsza - woe me if that is true!

I had a stock-tank full in my garden for years, I never had any problems.
DeleteOh yes, I see. Interesting. What the other folks said. I appreciate the Horsetail, but I'll never plant it.
