I went all the way to Austin to find the perfect plant...

Last August I purchased this metal planter from Indio Metal Arts at the Cracked Pots show at McMenamins Edgefield...

But it just sat around, unplanted, after I took that photo, above. Almost 10 months later and I finally figured out what to plant in it. Meet Obregonia denegrii...

During my visit to East Austin Succulents (post coming soon, of course), I bought a gallon sized pot containing a pair of Obregonia denegrii, one plant significantly larger than the other. I was about to plop them in a plain black container and then I remembered the metal, thank god!

Doing a little post-purchase research I read Obregonia denegrii described both as an "artichoke cactus" and an "an inverted pine cone with a woolly center" — either way I love it, and pray it loves me, and the metal planter.

Now let's see how long it takes me to plant up this giant chartreuse ModDish planter I won during the Garden Bloggers Fling raffle (thanks Steel Life!) ...

Hopefully I have it done in less than 10 months...

  1. Ooh, I love seeing this in your Cracked Pots find! A perfect pairing of fab plant and container. It was pretty exciting seeing the plant in person in your driveway nursery but your artistry with plants is equally fabulous.

  5. It was clearly meant to be. Great eye, Loree.

The new steel planter is definitely not going to sit empty for long, much less ten months; it's a LOT more, um, *insistent*.

    1. No, the base fit in my suitcase, the top part (the dish) was carried on. It's a good thing they were separate pieces.

    1. It's pretty darn big, luckily we checked a large suitcase and the base fit in it. The dish fit in my carry-on bag, barely.

  10. Nice raffle win. It looks huge, but if it fit in a carry-on, I guess not that huge. Those cacti are really wonderful!

    1. Oh it’s pretty big, 16” wide and 7.5” tall. But it’s two separate pieces and my carry-on was a soft sided, open tote.

  12. Something in the back of your mind must have directed you to buy 2 of those Obregonia as they're just right for that planter. I'd forgotten that you won the ModDish planter. Did you drop all your raffle tickets in that bowl? (I'm trying to set my future raffle strategy...)

  14. The larger "Furry artichoke pine cone" seem to either have a growth spurt in the center, or a bloom starting to form? Very cool plant to add to your collection.

  15. What unique planters. Both are fabulous. The one you filled is perfection. These bold forms compliment one another beautifully.
