So sorry to see this. I'm surprised Lila was willing to come out in this... does she have a little coat and ear muffs?
ReplyDeleteShe didn't get a choice, I carried her to the end of the driveway and sat her down. She turned for the house three times before finally giving up and taking care of business. No coat or ear muffs, although I once put her Halloween bumble bee costume on her for warmth when it was super cold.
DeleteAs a snowy climate dweller, I sympathize with you. This heavy, wet snow is the worst kind you can get since the weight can break branches.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post Tuesday, I visited your links to Heronswood and Far Reaches. Have you ever written about how you got interested in gardening and why you started? It sounds like you were not into it in the Heronswood years.
I hate it! (the snow)
DeleteI wouldn't say I wasn't interested in gardening during the Heronswood years, I spend a lot of time at City People's Garden store and Swanson's nursery. I didn't have a car for many of the years I lived in Seattle (that would have been needed to get to Heronswood) and I lived in an apartment, with only windowsills to garden on. So my plant acquisitions were extremely limited. Plus I honestly never heard of Heronswood! In my 20's in didn't know anyone who owned a home in Seattle, all of my friends were apartment dwellers too.
Agh! Just picture me speaking with Gollum's voice whenever I see snow -- "Snooooww! I hates it."
ReplyDeleteRight there with you sister!
DeleteIt caught me by surprise too. I know it was talked about, but I really thought it was all that - just talk. Oh well, I'll think about it as free, slow-release watering...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely didn't take me by surprise! I snowed all day long. I knew as soon as the temperatures dropped it would quickly add up.
Deletewow, it's been cold (for us), and we got an unexpected bit of rain Monday afternoon. So interesting how our coast with its different climate zones experiences these same systems. SF dipped into the 20s. That snow-engulfed plant in the right foreground looks fantastic - I can't imagine what it is now. Today was warmer, and I hope the same for you!
ReplyDeleteI think the plant you're referring to is a Callistemon. More snow last night...this is getting old already!
DeleteWell damn, that sucks. On the bright side, if it gets even colder, the snow will be a nice layer of insulation for your plants.
ReplyDeleteI think the Agaves would prefer to not be insulated by wet snow...
DeleteI find this picture utterly tantalizing since here in the southern hemisphere it's summer with temperatures are over 104F.. enough to kill my poor roses!
ReplyDeleteExtremes are never fun for the gardener...
DeleteYikes!!! Poor Lila, and poor Loree. I hope it's already melting...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely melted some yesterday, but we got a fresh coating last night.
DeleteMake a snowman ! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've got enough lawn for that...
DeleteOh, wow!
ReplyDeleteRight!?
