Wednesday Vignette, life on a stump

Although it's hard to tell, the subject of the photo below — and thus my Wednesday Vignette — is a stump. It's the stump of a once giant Photinia that grew between our driveway and the neighboring house..

I find myself watching this stump through out the year, there's so much life on it. Those little white-tipped things send a fine powder into the air when flicked.

The different moss and fungus are numerous.

But it's the turkey-tail mushroom that really captures my imagination. I had taken a dry (summertime) photo of it too, but now I can't seem to track that down.

The stump is part of the property that's for sale next to us (the subject of a past Wednesday Vignette), which has an offer pending. We don't know anything about the possible buyers, or their intentions. If stump destruction looks immanent I might just have to take matters into my own hands and rescue it. Andrew's handy with a saw...

  1. That stump is indeed a thing of beauty! Aren't turkey tail mushrooms so cool?

  2. That is in fact a miniature garden teeming with life. There is a whole universe on that forgotten stump and I'm glad you are standing guard.

  3. Definitely worth saving this stump if removal seems imminent. Fern table? Moss garden? The possibilities are numerous.

  4. That's one good-looking stump! Maybe you should inquire if the current owners would object to your removing this potential "tripping hazard" on their property before it becomes an issue in a home inspection...

    1. Ha! I like the way you think. The current owners are rather "removed" (long story) so maybe I should just get on with it.

  5. Have to laugh when you think about how hard we try to create something that looks like that stump. I would definitely try to rescue it if need be.

  6. I always say there is no death in the garden, this proves my point.

    1. I briefly wondered if cutting the stump would somehow alter the conditions for the worse. Then I walked by a pile of firewood (I think that's what they'll do with it) up the street and saw similar life.

  7. Hope you get nice new neighbors! Wouldn't it be fun if they were gardeners? :)

  8. There's a documentary on Netflix called "The Magic of Mushrooms." It's basic mushroom education, but the photography and video are fantastic!
