In a Vase on Monday (finally) the Zinnias...

My Zinnia seeds were planted late this year, due to our cool wet spring. It's taken them until now to start to open, and be worthy of cutting.

In addition to Zinnia elegans 'Envy' I also planted 'Queen Lime Blush'

And 'Queen Red Lime'...which it a little pink for my tastes, but then again this is just the first to open. Maybe they'll mellow with time.

A few 'Envy' stems were cut for a vase...

The variations are so interesting. There's the multiple rows of petals (above). Then you've got the two or three rows...

And the single rows.

They also get greener the longer they stay inside.

Once again, to cut down on the background noise, I took these photos in my "studio" (aka the bathroom — with it's neutral wall color). The vase captured my reflection, as well as that of my furry little helper, on my left. "What ya doin mom?"....

The Zinnia are living on the dining table, along with a stem of Amsonia hubrichtii, cut because it committed the ultimate sin — attempting to hide an Agave ovatifolia.

I do love it's feathery goodness.

And seedpods!

You may have noticed there haven't been any "mantle shots" recently. That's because the other member of the household has commandeered the mantle, equal rights you know?

He's displaying recently completed works and works in progress..

I couldn't help myself and started to move things around and make vignettes. I was told to stop. This is his thing, not mine. Okay, that's fair.

As always the "in a vase on Monday" round-up is hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.

  1. Oh I am definitely envious of your green zinnia, however many rows of petals it has!! It's known to be temperamantal to grow in the UK but perhaps I will try it again after my relative zinnia success this year. Your husband/partner's artwork is so intriguing and I would dearly love to know more about them

    1. Oh gosh yes, try 'Envy'! I fond them extremely easy. I'm trying to get Andrew to start some sort of online presence for his work. Until then he remains a man of mystery, showing up here and on my Instagram account. He used to show in a couple of galleries but chose to end those relationships.

    1. Thanks, the vase is metal, a silver metal — with the bottom half painted black.

  3. Cool zinnias and it's always fun to see Andrew's work. Whole new meaning to the phrase, "I'm in the studio."

  4. Now that I have an ample supply of Zinnias of my own, it's been fun to see just how much they do change as the blooms mature (usually getting better and more interesting as they age). However, your 'Envy' zinnias are much more impressive that any my garden has yielded thus far. Andrew's artwork is wonderful too and I can fully identify with the "hands-off" dictum, having been on the receiving end of similar pronouncements many times.

    1. Interestingly yesterday 'Queen Red Lime' started adding a row of green petals in the center...just when I'd written it off!

  5. Love the variations in the green Zinnia. Another reason I should give them a try. I don't think I've ever cut Amsonia when it is green. What a great vase it makes. We were just having that same mantle issue here.

  6. Love the amsonia foliage and the various green zinnias, which compliment one another well. Had to laugh about your 'studio' and little helper. Always curious!
Andrew's art is whimsical and fun!

I always think I'm going to plant some Zinna seeds, and never do. Thanks for doing it.
