In a Vase on Monday: cactus flower frog

The same visit when Peter (the Outlaw) brought the hot pink Bougainvillea, which I've absolutely loved this summer, he also brought this charming Saguaro...

It's intended purpose appears to be as a potpourri diffuser, but we've just been enjoying it as a decorative item, complete with those jaunty bumps and carved out holes like the desert birds do to real saguaros.

Then one day it hit me. It's true calling is to be used as a flower frog!!! The Saguaro could be placed in a shallow dish full of water (the bottom is open) and long stemmed-flowers pushed through the holes, are you with me?

Since I wanted to trim the flowers on the Ligularia (I don't care for them) I figured they'd make a suitable test.

What do you think?

Okay, it's a lot silly — but still — don't be surprised if it turns up again some Monday! Visit Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for links to bloggers making real arrangements today...

  1. It's great! I was growing that Ligularia and did not like the flowers either even though it had great foliage. I pulled it out and replaced it with the Rocket. Afterwards I realized I have a thing for vertical flowers and really need some more flat tops!

    1. It's the color of Ligularia flowers that gets me. I let these go longer than ever before but then one day I just could not take them anymore...

  2. I can see why you're not crazy about Ligularia flowers.....they really are plain Janes. Cute idea.....Almost anything can be used as a vase....that's one of the things I like about this meme....lots of creativity.

    1. Plain Janes and all the subtly of a school bus parked in the garden.

  3. I absolutely love how you repurposed the diffuser as a vase....it is a perfect combo...cactus and ligularia...the cactus looks in bloom.

    1. A cactus in bloom was my goal. It's hard to find flowers that mimic the true cactus flowers though!

  5. "Flower floozy" that I am, even I would cut those flowers off the Ligularia (assuming for a moment that I could even grow a plant that thirsty). And that ceramic cactus is definitely meant to hold flowers!

  9. A creative and fun use of your cactus. "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." Roald Dahl

  11. The sillier the better...and finally: a fun use for Ligularia blossoms (the color isn't even so obnoxious in combination with the green.)
