Visiting the garden of Keeyla Meadows, during the 2013 Garden Bloggers Fling…

This is exactly the garden I would expect from the woman who wrote Fearless Color Gardens: The Creative Gardener's Guide to Jumping Off the Color Wheel...

Subdued and understated, no. Exuberant and embellished, yes.

While it is way to chaotic for my personal taste I loved visiting. How can you not enjoy a space that is such a reflection of the owners style?

And of course it was full of beautiful plants.

And while there was a riot of color all around you the colors all played nicely together and transitioned perfectly from space to space.

Keeyla kindly opened her home and studio for us to wander through, even the second floor balcony off her bedroom. With my background in (and love of) lighting design these fixtures caught my eye.

What wonderful light to fall asleep under!

Outside on the balcony, looking down on the garden, it was shocking to see just how small the space was (and I totally missed that outdoor shower until looking at my pictures)...

I think you could visit this garden everyday for a month and still not take it all in, there were decorative touches everywhere!

I spotted Keeyla's vehicle on the street. Thank you for opening your colorful garden to us Keeyla!

  1. I have visited Keeyla's garden before; many years ago when she was just finishing the studio construction. Occasionally I would see her around town and could easily recognize her because she always carried a pair of Fiskars around her waste. She is a true artist.

  3. Keeyla may have jumped off the "official" color wheel, but whatever she jumped to is totally wonderful! I dearly love her color combos, her plants, her art, and her originality. She gives me inspiration to do ever more colorful and joyful things in my yard.

I enjoy all your posts. Thank you!

    1. For some reason reading your comment I realized I don't remember seeing any pets. Doesn't it seem like their should be a few cats wandering around? Maybe they were safely out of sight with all the strangers passing through.

Whoa, that yard is a lot of fun! Thanks for the post and for reminding me of summer in the garden...and also that I need one of those big reddish bananas in MY yard.

  7. Loree, Keeyla was similarly hospitable when I took my Idyll friends there in the summer of 2010 during our annual get-together. I try to get to her garden once a year-it changes quite a bit with the seasons, and I find it very uplifting to visit. I seem to smile the entire time I'm in it, but I would feel a bit over-stimulated (like being in Disneyland all summer)living there. And of course you can grow just about anything at all in that Berkeley climate.

  8. Chaotic maybe, especially when viewed in photos, but in person I bet this is a joyful and exciting place! (Glad you saved some of these posts for winter -- such a nice reminder of what warm is.)

    1. Indeed it is, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I would be very happy to spend a sunny afternoon on in this garden anytime.

  9. Your blog is lovely - and since you are posting, you apparently do not have the problem I have on my Blogger blog. I cannot type text into the body of my blog. Do you know of any resource to help remedy this?

    1. I scheduled these posts in advance, I like the buffer of having a couple of days worth already completed during the busy holiday season. I tried to so a simple test right now though and looked like I could, but then I didn't actually press 'publish' - I have heard some folks are having trouble commenting as well. There must be a link on your blogger blog to report issues?

  10. I enjoyed talking with her after seeing her eclectic hardscape and plant combos...really cool person and place she works out of and lives in. (too bad the world looks like cold-war era gray and brown, in comparison to her color overload...except our sky!)

    1. Missing her talk is my only regret in leaving early to wander the neighborhood.
