Please be aware...

This mossy scene can be found at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington. I stopped at the garden on the way up to the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival, in Seattle, in February, also known as the last adventure before lockdown and the COVID nightmare. The late afternoon light combined with the moss and green pond was such a visual treat.

I almost wrote that it was a mood lifter, but heck, my mood didn't need lifting then. I was on my way to a garden event where I'd see friends from all over the country and spring was happening all around me. COVID was in the news—in fact the first death in the U.S. (in Washington) would be announced that weekend—but we had no idea what was headed our way.

Here was, however, a warning that not everything was as it seemed, although I had to ask myself, "really!?!" Who would think the surface of the pond was a solid surface?

There is I suppose a corollary here for the state we are in as a country, but I don't have the energy to suss it out. Instead I'll just enjoy all the green.

  1. Ha! Nice connection. Reminds me in a way of the Malcolm Gladwell book 'Blink' which was about being able to make intuitive connections / accurate first impressions. The brain does rapid pattern matching based on previous experience.

  2. That's so sad they need a sign like this...but then again, I work at a public garden and I, unfortunately, 100% understand!

  3. The Azolla must have been very thick for anyone to mistake it for solid. Lovely serene photos. My Mom and I were at the show for the first few days. Haven't been able to see her since. So glad we had a great time at the show.

    1. How nice that you had that time together. In December it will have been a year since I've seen my parents, I miss them horribly.

  4. I am just going to enjoy the green and think about the blue wave that I believe must come.

  5. I've marked my calendar with the Rhododendron Botanical Garden plant sale, scheduled to take place Oct. 17-18.

It will be the first plant sale not canceled this year that I'll be able to attend. I can hardly contain myself.

    1. Fun! Too bad it's just a little further than an easy drive there and back in a day otherwise I'd be there.

  6. The degree to which businesses and public entities go these days to warn people of things you'd think were obvious is incredible, speaking both to the litigiousness of our society and perhaps serious deficiencies in our educational system, particularly when it comes to any of the sciences.

    1. As well as a deficiency in plain old common sense.

  7. This has to be a wonderous place to feel at peace and in awe of .. but it is sad that anyone would think that was a solid surface .. lack of education is something that can be remedied, but instilling common sense ? now that seems to be a rabid problem .. I agree that science in your country is under such attack it is stunning .. it will take decades to right the wrongs that this administration has committed .. I feel very badly for your country at the moment.
Trump was fully aware what was coming with this virus .. that is just a fact now. People that support him have to wake up at some point and time, but will it be too late I fear. I hope for the best for you all.
