Wednesday Vignette: opuntia + a killer tree house

Out on an afternoon walk (an attempt to save our sanity) I came across another new-to-me opuntia.

This one is even starting to develop a woody base.

The fence behind it was pretty cool too...

...and then I looked up.

How fun!

I wanna hang out up there...

...and maybe talk to passersby who stop to admire the opuntia...

  1. Someone has a pretty great sense of design and working with wood!

  2. Ohh, that's fantastic! I would totally hide out up there. Love the lively, undulating fence, too.

    1. I bet your huge old magnolia could hold a tree house...

  3. I would like to suggest that the plant is Opuntia ficus-indica, a domesticated cactus. I say this because it has no spines, only glochids, and because of its leaf shape and pattern of upright growth. The fruit is called "tuna" and the cladodes (leaves) make "nopales", a vegetable served in Mexican restaurants down here. It is also used as fencing.

    1. I thought that's what it might be too. One I've sadly not had any success with.

  4. I hope you get invited to see that treehouse up close someday, once the era of coronavirus is over. The fence is wonderful all by itself. An Opuntia backed by a Camellia in full flower is also a rather spectacular sight.

    1. The idea of being up there is wonderful, the actuality though, I'm not so sure. I get all dizzy climbing ladders.

  5. I adore the tree house. There is a reteat located in Washington state, where one stays in a rather elaborate tree house. It's on my bucket list!

  7. Our neighbor has a new baby boy. Recently four very tall poles appeared in his yard. I immediately assumed "treehouse for little Mac" but noooo, he is putting in a zip line. My disappointment was palpable but then I am something of a treehouse nut. Thanks for showing us this one...it rocks!
