We're back in one of the gardens from April's Bromeliad Summit (this one). As I was going through the last of the photos, deciding what to post, I saw something I don't remember seeing "in real life"...
What the heck? Here in Portland, those rings are at curb level and they were used for tying up horses, back in the day.
Do you suppose that's what happens here?

Sure looks like it! If so, they were nice enough to raise the rings up a bit, so you wouldn't have to bend down to secure your horse. Would horses even eat Agaves?? What a perfect shadow outline!
ReplyDeleteI bet they'd eat those Agave attenuata, if they were hungry enough.
DeleteWhat a perfect piece of sculpture for the garden.
ReplyDeleteIt does seem rather at home.
DeleteThere are "horse people" in Santa Barbara. Perhaps that post harkens back to an earlier era too.
ReplyDeleteThat would be fabulous, if they'd kept an original.
DeleteThe faux stump is equally interesting. Do you remember seeing another on the other side? The only other possibility to my mind would be a chain across the driveway. I suppose it wasn't all that long ago that horses were common on ranches in the area.
ReplyDeleteI don't even remember seeing this one! But there was a sort of archway as you entered the driveway near the home, so I don't think this is where they'd chain the drive. Plus there was a gate as you enter the estate.
