Wednesday Vignette: that clematis!

There have been exactly three times that a clematis has caused me to stop and point, begging for ID from anyone walking by...

This first time was at Cistus Nursery, when I saw Clematis tibetana var. vernayi growing over a fence. I'd never seen anything like it and I had to have it.

The second time happened when visiting the Eckerdt Garden as part of the Salem Study Weekend. I saw Clematis florida var. sieboldiana and was awe-struck.

This was the third...

In Boulder, Colorado, at the garden of Tatiana Maxwell, during the 2019 Garden Bloggers Fling.

Once we were back on the bus I took to Facebook and posted photos, surely someone could identify it.

And they did, Clematis 'Multi Blue'...

Everyone agreed, but none of the photos I see online have quite the same magic as this plant.

Maybe it was just an exceptional specimen; the deep color...

The super fluffy centers...

Maybe I just need to track it down and grow it myself?

Yep, that's probably what I need to do.

P.S. we'll see the rest of this garden tomorrow...

  1. It's pretty fabulous! You should definitely hunt one down. Heck, I'm tempted even though I have a poor track record with the genus.

  2. Wow - that's fantastic! I have a Multi-blue, but it was languishing in too much shade so I moved it this summer. It hasn't done much since, but I'm hoping for a big show next summer. Last I checked, it was at least alive, even if still sulking. Fingers crossed...

  3. The flowers are dramatic enough but it is the fact that it trails down the wall and onto the walk that really grabs me.

  4. Those flowers are pretty cool, they remind me of 'Josephine' but blue instead of pink. The fact that it's growing next to an enormous swath of Parthenocissus makes it seem even more impressive. I agree you need to find one and give it a try.

    1. It's a great illusion, the way the foliage of the climatis and the parthenocissus blend together.

  5. A head-turner, for sure! I love how it is almost iridescent.

  7. Definitely need to track one down. It would make a nice (fifth?) addition to your already glowing collection of clematis.
