Andrew and I spent our 10th wedding anniversary in San Diego. While we visited lots of gardens and nurseries, one of my most vivid memories is of the flamingos at the San Diego Zoo.
It was the only time I've seen these fabulous creatures in person.
But I've had a fondness for them (and all the kitchy designs inspired by them) my entire life.
Funny thing, little pink flamingos started appearing around our house last week, on our 12th anniversary.
They seemed particularly attracted to the dried Protea...
And were quite curious about these seed pods.
One hung out in the bottle-tree Christmas forest.
And one seemed distracted by its own reflection in the metal bathroom shelf.
This one seemed to long for the outdoors. Silly thing, it was cold out there!
While it took me awhile to locate all 6 flamingos, my anniversary flowers were easier to spot.
What with their bright tropical heart-shaped blooms...
And clear winter-white flowers.

I bet your curious flamingos were searching for those naughty elves. Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteAh yes, I suspect you're on to something.
DeleteSo the wee flamingos were a gift from Andrew? Aren't flamingos in the flesh just the most fabulous birds? Calling them pink is so inaccurate. That's a great closeup shot, the second picture down from the top. There used to be large flocks of them at Disney World, but the last time we were there we didn't see any. Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteYes, and I think he had as much fun staging them as I did finding them. I was truly shocked at their color, or rather the range of colors.
DeleteHappy anniversary! The tiny flamingos are an especially inspired touch. Your Andrew is very clever and has an eye for impactful floral and foliage design. My own anniversary falls just after Valentine's Day, which often means sadly bedraggled holiday blooms.
ReplyDeleteThis year, since we didn't travel to California for the holiday, it was especially nice to receive such tropical anniversary flowers.
DeleteHappy anniversary! This is what you get for trying to scare someone with a severed head. No wait, that didn't sound right. The someone you were trying to scare wasn't headless.
ReplyDeleteHa! Never-the-less I like the way you said it.
DeleteThe curvy necks are divine but what really gets me is the way their knees bend backwards. Happy Anniversary, you two!
ReplyDeleteIt kind of hurts if you spend too long looking at those knees.
DeleteHappy anniversary, Loree! And what fun and fabulous ways to celebrate it ;-)
ReplyDeleteAlmost as good as another trip to San Diego...
Deletewow, they are far more vivid orange than pink. the pink is quite pale. as a bird nerd, how can i abide those hot pink plastic jerks in my garden? Happy anniversary, the visiting teeny flamingos remind me of the three wise men tradition of journeying around the house until 12th night. i little bit of adorable goes a long way.
ReplyDeleteI found this article, about their diet and coloring, to be interesting: http://chemistry.about.com/od/howthingswork/f/why-are-flamingos-pink.htm. And I didn't know about the wise men tradition, is this a family tradition or more widespread?
DeleteLooking at your colorful flamingoes and the gorgeous pictures of your indoor plants with little visitors was a real pick me up on a warm but rather dull day in my garden. I particularly like the one in the bottle tree forrest. Happy Anniversary.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenny...we've been so cold here lately I would love to have a warm, but dull, day.
DeleteCongratulations. What fun, and so adorable.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
