In my post on the garden of Carolyn and Larry Kolb I pointed out what seemed to be a floating dish in their pond. On it were several water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), it gave me an idea and I vowed to try it in my garden with my Salvinia minima. Of course I couldn't stop there and have enjoyed snipping an occasional Passiflora bloom to add, but only when it was blooming away in a spot not visible from the patio. The title of this Wednesday Vignette comes from Andrew's response when he saw it...

Is that Salvina a water plant? Seeds? Doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. But I love the glassy shine with the plate and the drama of the flower. My husband made me a "valentine" many years ago out of rusted industrial saw blades, so I never think twice about metal in a garden. Cutesy garden decor, however, sends me over the edge.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a tiny water plant...looks like little brown velvet leaves, I love it! You and I see eye to eye on cutesy...no place for that in my garden!
DeleteIt's a wonderful way of displaying plants that might otherwise get lost and light enough not to sink. A great use of a pie plate (which never get used for their intended purpose in my household).
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, it's not even a pie plate but rather a small cake stand! It has a base that is underwater, I think by trapping the smallest bit of air it helps the dish stay afloat.
DeleteOh, that Andrew... I like your adaptation of what you saw in the Kolb garden. Passiflora closeup is fab!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't tell by his response if I liked it or not. I didn't press any further because I didn't want to know if he didn't!
DeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who sees pie plates everywhere. ;)
ReplyDeleteThose tropical passiflora blooms are so nice -- but is there a passiflora bloom that isn't?
Word! And this one might be hardy here...or so the tag says. Maybe.
DeleteLove it - it reminds me of those massive tropical waterlily leaves, except metallic. And, of course, the Passion flower is just dreamy - great close-up shot!
ReplyDeleteYES! I wondered if anyone would see the tropical waterlilly connection, thanks Anna!
DeleteVery tasteful and fun pond ornament :)
ReplyDeleteFun and tasteful...two of my favorite things.
