The trouble with putting things aside to share at a later time is that the details get foggy. Case in point I'm having a hard time remembering how I came across this Peanuts book, Travels with My Cactus.
Surely you've heard of Snoopy's brother Spike? Spike lives in the desert...Needles, California to be exact.
His only friend is a cactus.
Spike decides to visit Snoopy and writes him a letter letting him know he's on the way.
There are several pages detailing their travels as Spike and his cactus make their way across the country to visit (Charlie Brown and the gang were said to live in Minneapolis). I don't want to share too much, then you'd have no reason to buy the book!
My favorite part is towards the end when Spike and his cactus friend finally arrive, with perfect timing to catch Linus out waiting for The Great Pumpkin.
Naturally Linus mistakes the cactus for The Great Pumpkin. Which reminds me, I wonder if it's too late to catch the cartoon on TV this year...

Spike is the only living thing in the Peanuts universe that has real eyes with eyelids. He must have been considered a freak and an outcast, which would explain his living in the desert.
ReplyDeleteAny chance that Linus gets mistaken for a cactus by Spike? He's looking quite spiky in silhouette.
Excellent observation, on both accounts. I do wish that I could report a Linus/cactus mix-up but no, nothing of the sort.
DeleteThis is the first time I've seen this. I love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's great fun.
DeleteLooks like a cute book!
ReplyDeleteTis!
DeleteSuch fun...thank you for the sharing....need to track down the book for my grandchildren!
ReplyDeleteOh yes...do!
DeleteToo cute. We have The Great Pumpkin on DVD. You've reminded me to dig it out.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Have fun.
DeleteHehe. What a fun book!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to find a kid to share it with.
DeleteAnd here I thought Snoopy was an only child - er, pup.
ReplyDeleteNope, by some accounts he's supposed to have 7 siblings.
DeleteMy dad wasn't much for cartoons, but Spike in Needles (Topock Swamp, if I remember right) was a favorite character of his. Thanks for bringing back some very fond memories!! [runs off to Amazon to look for this book -- it's there, yay!]
ReplyDeleteI really liked Peanuts as a kid. I remember thinking Lucy's question about pounds and ounces ("How many ozzies in a lib?") was too hilarious for words.
ReplyDeleteWe actually had visitors the other day who talked about growing up in Needles. How serendipitous is that?
