Pot Incorporated at Contained Exuberance
If you've been to the Xera Plants retail shop here in Portland you've no doubt seen the potted creations of Bob Hyland, owner of Contained Exuberace/Hyland Garden Design, who shares their space. While I always enjoy checking out what Bob's come up with, things just got a whole lot more exciting because he's carrying the brightly colored hanging "Hover Dish" pots designed by Pot, Incorporated. You know, these guys...(photo of their display at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show, taken by Vanessa Gardner Nagel)...
Since I missed the NWFG Show this year I hadn't gotten to see these containers in person, until now.
The are just as fabulous as I suspected they would be.
Naturally Bob had a wealth of plants to chose from to plant these up...
I have to share this unexpected gem just outside the Xera shop door...Adinah from Xera came up with this creative solution for a space that could have easily become a neighborhood ashtray.
Too cute right?
These are pretty spectacular too. I've lusted after the metal version for years.
Bob's container choices tend toward neutral colors...
So when he throws in a pop of color it's all the more striking.
While chatting about the Pot, Inc. containers Bob commented on how well made they are.
With great details like the ability to release the wires and move them out of the way while planting.
And look, a drainage hole! Yay for that.
These are not inexpensive containers, priced at $125, $135 and $175, but also not out of the range of other comparable designs.
Before I left I had to head outside to soak up more sunshine and look at a few more containers...
Well designed hanging planters are so hard to find, I'm thrilled these are now available here in Portland!

I loved those pots the minute I spied them at the NWFGS! Great to hear Bob is stocking them - I agree that those hits of color make all his other pots look even better. I can already see one hanging from your shade pavilion!
ReplyDeleteI wish! With the expense of the privet-lands project this year (removal, fence, planting) it's not in the budget. But next year...perhaps!
DeleteI like those big, flat bowls in the third from last image. I would love a couple of them to put some Sempervivum in, but they are difficult to find around here.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I called the owners of an abandoned building here in Portland who had a few buried under weeds and made them an offer. They declined saying they liked them too and had plans for them. You can imagine how that went...(they're still buried).
DeleteImpressive pots. The hanging planters look like colorful flying saucers. I was all in until I saw the prices - maybe I'll put one on next year's Christmas wishlist.
ReplyDeleteThe perfect Christmas gift!
DeleteI splurged and bought a blue one a few weeks ago (mail order). Just waiting for a good selection of succulents to arrive in the nurseries and a free day to plant it up.
ReplyDeleteOh that's exciting Pam, you'll share pictures on your blog once you plant it up right?
DeleteVery nice. That metal striated container you lust for is also an obsession of mine. At the flea mkt last Sunday I was determined to stop window shopping and finally take one home, hoping to spend $60, tops. Asking price was $225. I should have grabbed the first one I saw years ago. Now I'm seeing them on design blogs as indoor tables with improvised table tops. I wonder what their original use was?
ReplyDeleteGood question! The first one I saw was at Smith & Hawken, way too pricey for me at $100. When they had their going out of business sale (half off) I hoped to grab it but someone (probably an employee) was faster than me.
DeleteYou are KILLING me! I saw that Teal hanging planter today at Xera and haven't stopped thinking about it since. You have pushed me over the edge....it's SO expensive but so gorgeous. When Bob told me the price I thought "That's nuts!' but then I said "It's really more art than gardening, so I guess the price isn't that insane. Uggh
ReplyDeleteAnd it will last forever! You're going back today to buy it, right???
DeleteThose hanging containers are so colorful, and I normally adore bright colors, but what I really love are those low concrete(?) dishes. That shape really appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteMe too Alison, I've been trying to score one of those for years...
DeleteOh boy, these are just goooorgeous. I was expecting you to say you bought the orange one ;)
ReplyDeleteYou know me well.
DeleteThey look so cool and love the colour, depth, and shape of them. And it's not often you see classy and contemporary hanging pots like these!
ReplyDeleteI know! Why is it so difficult? There are horrible ones everywhere.
DeleteAnyone who could put together the dish planters on posts can surely replicate those hanging dish planters.
ReplyDeleteOh I do love a challenge...
DeleteWhat a great place! Can't wait to visit again and maybe take that head planter home.
ReplyDeleteThat certainly does scream out to be in your garden.
DeleteI love those tall metal containers, too. The ones I've seen here are made of zinc. I've seen labels on several calling them English washtubs. Like you, I should have bought early. Now the prices are more than I want to pay. The really maddening thing is that I saw one for $80.00 in a junktique place about three years ago. (The people did not know what they had.) I was already late for an appt. and thought I'd swing back by after and nab it. Yep. Someone walked in right behind me and knew what a bargain it was. It was gone when I returned later.
ReplyDeleteOh Sandy...so close, but yet so far...
DeleteThose are really inspiring and the color choices delightful. Turquoise blue is calling me!
ReplyDeleteThat does seem like a very "you" color Jenni!
DeleteWow, these are great, and I love all the shades of green in the wall paint, the pots, and the hanging planters. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteIt's a month later and I still have planted it up yet. Whomp, whomp, whomp.
