Today's post is brought to you by the letter "O"

This is not the usual angle at which I see this giant tree. But that straight-on view is from a heavily traveled street and it wasn’t worth risking my life to get the better shot. Every time I see it I can’t help but see a giant O, and hear it say “Ouch! Noooooooo…I wasn’t meant to grow like this!” Poor tree.

  1. Ohhhhhh noooooooo! Where is that? Is it inner SE Portland?

  2. Are those wires going through the center of the tree? If so around here that would be half a tree, with everything removed on the wire side of the trunk. After an ice storm a few years back the utility company got proactive and removed pretty much anything that could knock down wires. Lots of "Eric" trees since then.

  3. We have plenty of the "wide V" old trees here in North Portland. So painful.

  4. Tree torture like this should be outlawed, along with tree-topping. I hate seeing the Asplundh truck in any residential neighborhood, and I don't buy that they're providing any kind of thoughtful "specialized vegetation management" (their words).

Sorry, I got a little strident there, but this topic really sets me off!

  5. "But that tree won't grow that fast, and by then, I'll be dead. I like the shade." Great illustration, Danger!

  6. I have to say, I've seen worse.

If only American education included fifteen minutes on the reasons why not to plant 80 foot tall directly under 20 foot tall power lines. If only.

  9. Patricia, yes exactly! You know your Portland streets don't you?

Alan, yes, there are wires running crazy all around there. I have to admit I don't get the "Eric" trees reference???

LeLo, oh yes...the "V" is another prominent letter in the landscape.

    MulchMaid, rant on anytime!

    DD, excellent caption!

Hoover, oh for sure there are a lot worse examples. This one was chosen simply because of the dramatic "o"

Anon, expanding on the idea this class would be an entire years worth of random common sense teachings. Maybe the perfect place to slip in my oft desired compulsory 2 weeks labor in retail or restaurant work at the holidays. Those that have never done it might learn a bit of compassion for those that do. Just a theory of mine.

Lauren, sorry to bring you down.
