January 2012, Bloomday

Saved by the Mahonia…
It would have been a bloomless Bloomday without my Mahonia × media‘Charity’
I’ve got plenty of “almost blooms” including a couple of Hellebores that I thought for sure were going be part of the January show. Nope, they’ll have to wait for February; in the meantime I’ll soak up these sunny yellow blooms…
I also want to share the blooms I’m currently enjoying indoors, for the simple reason that I rarely have had cut Leucadendron stems open this far…
Only $2 for a tall branched stem resulted in 3 vases worth of shorter stems. I’m glad I fell for the temptation, but I really wish I could grow these in my garden, zonal envy rears it's ugly head again.
Happy January Bloomday to you all, visit May Dreams Gardens for the official round-up of all the Bloomday posts. A note about my blog...I've been making a few updates, one of which is the larger photos that you may have noticed debuted on this post. Hopefully my photography can stand up to such exposure! If you notice any formatting that seems a bit off I would appreciate your letting me know.

  1. Mahonia! Love the protea like blooms, Leucadendron is a strange one, although I've never seen them up here. Photos look great, no formatting errors thus far.

    2. Really no Leucadendron even as cut flowers? I thought they were a staple! I've only seen the plant available once, from Cistus. Naturally I bought it, and then killed it. :(

  2. Oregon grape! I love it.

  3. Mahonias are at their element this time of the year. A must in every temperate garden me thinks!

  5. Mahonia looks great, beautiful this time of year and I'm putting it on my list if it can take the heat here.

Love the new, larger photos too. Congratulations, looks like the new format is working.

  6. I love mahonia, but the leucadendron is extra special. I need to research what growing conditions they like. Maybe I can grow them here.

    1. This is my second Mahonia × media ‘Charity’...the first one bloomed last year and then turned crispy. I hope this one lives on!

  9. I was just going to say how nice your photos were....yes, they are standing up quite nicely to the new size. No problems that I can detect.
Love those vases and foliage combos. Too cool!
    Happy GBBD, Loree!

  10. Lovely Mahonia brightening up your garden! The Leucadendrons are beautiful indoor "blooms"...somehow they don't quite seem real to me.

  11. I've been looking for mahonia. When I didn't need one I found them everywhere, now that I want one, I can't seem to find them! Isn't that how it always goes? So glad yours was blooming for you! Happy GBBD!

    1. Oh yes that is how it seems to go! But I am surprised as this is their time of the year to shine. I would think all nurseries would have them front and center!

  13. I had been thinking your photos needed to be bigger...and now they are! Jack Frost robbed me of my Mahonia blossoms yet again...RATS! I'll just have to be satisfied with enjoying yours.

  14. Mahonia... don't those flowers just look great in this snow? I'm crazy about Mahonia this winter and have vowed to extend the season in my own garden by planting four or five that will keep the hummers fed from October to March. It's a goal, anyway...

  15. aloha,

wow, i'm fond of both plants, thats a beautiful yellow on that protea - its also too wet in my area to plant these mediterranean beauties :)

  16. It would have been a sad month without the mahonia! In addition to blooming bravely when no others dare to bloom, they're really cool-looking, aren't they? Maybe even more exotic than the exotic leucadendron indoors? Happy Bloomday!
