The Portland Farmers Market

This is the season you absolutely have to visit the farmers market.
All the good things are available.
They’re incredible.I’m not sure if they look as good as they taste…
Or they taste as good as they look…
Either way it’s amazing. These strange little stems (below) are greens for a salad. I didn't buy any last week but if they have them again this week I will.
Those are not water droplets! The are actually part of the structure of the plant. They feel smooth like someone dipped them in acrylic. I can't wait to try them!
If I were being a good blogger I would have came home and assembled a beautiful picture of all the wonderful things I purchased.
Maybe next week. Instead I just got to work figuring out what I was going to do with them all. And eating. Rasberries, a carrot, you know…you’ve got to sample the goods!

  1. I've never seen a farmers market like that! Most of the produce in local markets isn't even local. Tell us what that water droplet-ey plant is when you find out! It looks very interesting.

  2. I want that ONE pale golden basket of raspberries. So artistic, that berry display. Beautiful pictures -- kudos to you! -- I wish my farmers market here in the Haight in SF was quite so photogenic!

  8. RFG, I am sorry! I went back today and I bought some and I thought I would remember the name and I didn't. I should have taken a picture of the sign as they had one up this week. They are amazing!!!!

phyte club katie, omg love your "name"! I am so lucky, I realize that. Heaven pure and simple.

Delphine, it sounds so much fancier when you say it.

Lauren, I know exactly what you mean.

Kate, they are a little bitter but good. Very fresh and peppery. Like a thicker arugula crossed with a rubbery cucumber (but in a good way).

ricki, actually I ate (we ate) just about everything I bought raw. I am a sucker for raw veggies. I did cook a chicken dish with the tomatillos but I wish I would have made salsa with them instead.

    Grace, ha!
