Vintage Hawaiian Fun

I’m generally against recycling content that has already been posted on another blog but these vintage 50’s postcards are so fabulous that I had to share!I first saw them on Paradis Express, a blog out of France. If you’ve never visited it is worth checking out, amazing inspiration from around the globe available in one location. Both postcards are from the Haleakala National Park in Hawaii. The featured plant is a Silversword, which I had never heard of but Wikipedia has helped to educate me, and you too if you click here. The next 2 photos are from the Wikipedia page, I hope they don’t mind me borrowing them. They were just too fabulous not to share! I really need to visit Hawaii!

  1. I've been to Hawaii, but didn't see a silversword that I'm aware of....too bad, it looks very cool. It would definitely be a good danger garden trip and the flower scents alone are worth the journey. Do take lots of mosquito repellent if you go.

  2. I've been to Maui (not up to Haleakala crater though). I wonder if these treasures still exist? My vague recollection of my in-laws pictures says yes. Hawaii is wonderful. I can't wait to go back someday.

  3. Those postcards are lovely. The sunrise at Haleakala crater and the silversword are highly memorable-though you have to wake up at 3 am to catch the tour. You can check out my posts on both from my trip there in November 2007:

  4. "I really need to visit Hawaii" - me, too! Especially in January or February, or even in May when it's often still really chilly around here.

  6. I checked on wikipedia and the first image you used has been released into the public domain (meaning anyone can use it)and the second is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5. ( meaning anyone can use it once the source is acknowledged)

Wikipedia has a "wiki commons" where you can upload your photos giving permission for others to use, thus increasing knowledge. Whenever I have time I upload dozens of my nature photos to this so that others can legally use them.

I find it amusing how some bloggers get really uptight about their photos being reposted, as often these photos have zero commercial value. I am not referring to photos of professional photographers, those who will use their photos in books etc. or where content is stolen/used for commercial purposes.` Just like some one off use of a photo, in the grand scheme of things, of little significance.

  7. Hi DG~~ I think the most important thing is to give credit to the source of your photo.

Having spent a goodly share of my childhood on the big island, I never came across this beauty because I've read that Haleakala is the only place on the planet where they grow. And of course if you take any, the volcano goddess, Pele or some other Hawaiian diety, will curse you til the day you die. [As a kid the Hawaiian legends freaked me out.]

  8. I'm heading to Hawaii on 12/13 and am counting the days, hours, minutes and seconds to the moment I get on the plane and out of this snow. :)

    Great inspiration.

  9. I've never had any desire to go to hawaii, just went once to visit family. However, the plant life might change my mind.
If I find my pictures on some other online source, I always think - how cool, someone else found this useful! I think most people are flattered to be referenced.

  10. Jane, some day...

Katie, according to Nicole (see above) they do!

Nicole, wake up at 3 am? I think I might have more luck staying up until 3 am to catch the sunrise, and then going to sleep. Thanks for the links! And for the info on the images, I agree about the one-off use...although when they don't give credit its kinda smarmy.

VW, ah yes...you really should get out of Spokane in the winter! You deserve it!

AZ plant lady, I can spend a good chunk of time looking through post cards at an antique store...so many cool old images!

Grace, Oh my....yes, you bring back memories of that spooky Brady Bunch visits Hawaii episode! I had nightmares!!!

Kate, lucky you! Take lots of pictures to share okay?

Megan, my Hawaii desire is all plant based. Beautiful! Oh and the fruity drinks would be fun too!
