Love Lessons from a Forty-Four-Year-Old Plant Shop in New York City | The New Yorker Documentary

Andrew shared this video with me, it came up as a recommendation in his news feed. It's complex. There are the plants, which of course I enjoyed seeing. I also enjoyed the glimpses of life in a NYC plant shop—such a different way of selling plants than what I see here in Portland plant shops. Beyond that there is their relationship. We only see bits and pieces, but it is kind of sad. So why am I sharing this? Because life isn't just about pretty pictures: watch it here.

  1. This couple already had their shop when I first visited NYC in 1981. I had no idea, of course, and I wasn't gardening back then.
It's sad to view the dynamics of this couple, as love, care and the outmost attention goes into the plants... and not enough "listening" to the relationship.

    1. The plants are thriving, the people... not so much.

  2. I was surprised this documentary held my interest to the end but perhaps I was looking for clues as to what happened to Maria. I appreciated the commentator who suggested that she went back to school to obtain a degree in chemistry. I wonder if she was as unhappy 5, 10, 15 years into the business?

    1. Yes, clearly this was long term unhappiness, but how long?

  4. Interesting, a cautionary tale... the takeaway is to ask questions and LISTEN!

    1. Yes, listen. Such a hard skill for many.

  5. The shop must have a quick turnover in plants. There is not enough light in there for them to grow as they should. He needs to sell, sell, sell! Obviously she was not happy with him anymore or with the plants so good that she is no longer working with him.

    1. I agree about the lighting, but then thought maybe we just weren't seeing it as it really is (artistic "mood" lighting for the camera). I mean the plants all looked healthy.

  6. Hard to watch... I mean did you see the amount of water they put on those cacti? :)

    1. YES! I almost commented on that very fact.
