November of 2011 I shared a blog post with a year's worth of photos taken looking straight out our front door, roughly once a week, in the morning. I won't go into the inspiration behind the idea, but if you're interested look back at the original blog post here. I started with this photo on November 11th, 2010...
And ended November 9th, 2011
The garden was so different then! I thought it would be interesting to compare mornings in August, so here's the photo from August 15th, 2011. The rhododendron on the left was threatening to take over, the bishops weed was still going strong, and oh my, the Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' (black mondo) looked so healthy!
Here's the same shot, taken last Wednesday, Aug 7th. Things look a little golden, but on the upside I'd only just broken down and watered, for the first time all year!

It's interesting seeing how your garden has changed since 2011. I also went back to the old post and looked at all the photos in that progression. They were fascinating. Wow! You really are stingy with water.
ReplyDeleteOnly stingy in the front garden, the back garden gets plenty of lovin...
DeleteThe front gets a little more water when I'm in charge...
DeleteWho's there? Patricia? Ann?
DeleteThat's a wonderful idea - the kind of idea that only occurs to me when it's already too late. I would have loved to have a picture of what my garden looked like when we first moved in, but me, being who I am, didn't think to take a picture. Trust me when I say it was appallingly different! As was yours - it was fun to see the transformation! Did you take out those infernal Snowbells, or did things just grow so big that I can't see them?
ReplyDeleteThey (unfortunately) are still there. Looking especially horrible this year too, I might add.
DeleteI keep thinking I will do this with one garden view. It's kind of fun and certainly useful. Have to say I like the current August iteration better than the former combos.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, you should definitely do it. I might revive with a different view. It's a fun practice.
DeleteI find comparison shots so interesting to see what changes have happened. I'm impressed you successfully eliminated Bishop's Weed. No small feat!
ReplyDeleteIt was such a job, all by hand too...
DeleteWas that a Canna with the orange flowers in Before, and is 'Austin Griffiths' in the Before? He's looking lovely in the After.
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to see what's changed.
Yes, I had quite a few cannas out there in the original, more "tropicalesque" front garden. Austin moved in the spring 2011 so he would have been in the second two "then" photos. He was just a tiny guy though.
DeleteThe present is decidedly more spiky!
ReplyDeleteAnd that my friend is not an accident.
DeleteLike Alison, I went back and looked at the 2011 post. I'm captivated by the idea, and reminded of an older movie called 'Smoke' from 1995, with Harvey Kaitel. Every day, he took a photo of the same street corner... intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE before and afters, as many do. So satisfying and interesting. It's a chance to evaluate and remember what was there (many things have come and gone for most of us, I'm sure) and often is the spark for new ideas. Great post. I love that you have only watered once this year. Still you have a very beautiful and climate appropriate garden. I love your front garden, Loree.
