This has been a VERY florific year for the Magnolia macrophylla, nearly every branch had a bud at the end, I've been enjoying the show for almost a month. For my WV this week I thought I'd share various stages of the flowers opening. I wish you could smell the fragrance, and see the size of these huge flowers, some of which measure 19" wide when fully open...

Those are majestic blooms; it's a little hard to imagine at 19" wide! White isn't an easy color to photograph but your shots are a beauty.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for flowers on my Ashe bigleaf Magnolia, but so far there is no sign. It seems to be growing very slowly too. Maybe I need to give it a boost of organic fertilizer or compost.
ReplyDeleteClifford was in the ground for 4 years before we got our first bloom. I read the other day on plantlust.com that Avant Gardens says they "may take up to 15 years to flower"...
DeleteDon't you just wish someone would develop a scratch and sniff blog function. Gorgeous flowers!

Yes!
DeleteOne of my favorite trees! I've been enjoying the fragrance and magnificent blooms on my own tree. Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteIt just amazes me that you've got a hell strip wide enough to plant this tree.
DeleteA 19" blossom and fragrant... WOW
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful that you can get close enough to get great shots. I've got a grandiflora and most of the flowers are so high, I can't get good photos of them. I need a drone...
ReplyDeleteIt helps that I haven't let Andrew prune the lowest branches yet...
Delete19 inches, wow! That must be a sight (and scent) to behold. The petals look thick and velvety.
ReplyDeleteThey are, and a little leathery too.
DeleteLove watching the whole life cycle. What a gorgeous flower.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness: lucky you! I really enjoyed this series. That fifth photo down, with the bloom framed by the foliage, is stunning! Great choice for vignettes.
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth!
Delete19"! Amazing. That first photo gives me the most hint of that, for some reason. I wish I could smell the fragrance too. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd invite you over, but the show is pretty much done for the season. Next year!
DeleteDo the petals fall cleanly off when they age? I used to have an M. macrophylla in a pot--LOVED it. Never saw the monster blooms...so I'm curious.
DeleteYep. Well, they fall to the ground. Sadly they don't clean themselves up.
DeleteSpectacular! My tree is still in its infancy. I am so looking forward to it blooming.
ReplyDeleteHope it happens soon!
DeleteWhere can I find one of these?!? Actually wondering about Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei.
ReplyDeleteCistus!
