Pollarding day, March 12 (the cut branches to the left are Sambucus Black Lace)
And today...
Ya gotta love a tree that just gets on with it!

Holy Smokes! You cut your Sambucus back like that too? I think I need to try that.
ReplyDeleteI do, and it grows fast as well (you can see it in the second photo). The idea was you get bigger leaves if you cut it back (the Sambucus), I have no idea if that's true...
DeleteOne of these days I'm going to plant a golden Catalpa and treat it like this. Or maybe I'll just try this :).
ReplyDeleteYou've got the room to really let it grow!
DeleteThis plant simply rockets!
ReplyDeleteTrue that.
DeleteYou have a loquat there! I love that tree! I have a small one, the foliage is gorgeous and bees love the flowers.
ReplyDeleteGood eye! The plan is that Loquat will someday hide the ugly view the Paulownia is currently masking. Being evergreen it will do the job year 'round.
DeleteI could use a few plants like that (although preferably with light drinking habits).
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much growth this guy puts on relative to the water it receives. It must have amazing roots.
DeleteImpressive growth! Makes me want to cut one of mine to the ground as was the original plan.
ReplyDeleteWhy/when did you deviate from the plan?
DeleteWOW...Love the leaves!
ReplyDeleteMe too.
Deletetough love! next year i am going to cut back my collection of sambucus. why haven't i planted Paulownia tomentosa to blot out the neighbors? i suspect it needs full sun, which i am short on.
ReplyDeleteMine does receive a great deal of sun.
DeleteWOW! And that Andrew is clearly a handy fellow to have around.
ReplyDeleteSo true! Last year I did it myself, but it put on so much growth I needed help.
DeleteCool! I look at my 20' Black Lace and wonder why the hell I didn't think of that... I've been forcing it to head upwards rather than out, but didn't think to go this far. Do you think it's too late if I try it next year? The Pawlownia is a beautiful tree, but I still have to find a spot for my Magnolia macrophylla. An annual pushback of the Elderberry just might provide the answer...
ReplyDeleteI remember that Megan (plant lust) once wrote about neglecting to cut hers back and showed a fairly large diameter stump when she finally did (it resprouted). So no, I don't think it's too late, but you could check with her first.
DeleteHides that neighbor's garage very nicely.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love it for that.
DeleteHeh. I wish all my trees would grow that fast! I have a couple that come close.
ReplyDeleteWhat are they?
DeleteMy Paulownia finally pooped out ! I guess cutting it down to the ground every year wore it out .
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that won't happen eventually. Although we won't cut it to the ground until the Loquat grows a little more.
