Rare Plant Research open house this weekend!

There’s Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, and of course birthdays too. Heck July 4th and the dynamic duo Memorial Day and Labor Day are also right up there. But the other big holiday on my calendar? It’s the weekend that Rare Plant Research throws open their gates and welcomes the public.

I can look around my garden and spot so many (loved) plants I’ve purchased during this event. Mr. Big, my Agave americana variegata…
This NOID Bromeliad (which will hopefully color up now that it’s back out in the sunshine)

The (currently colorful) Aloe dorotheae
Agave geminiflora…

And a lovely hot(!) Canna which has just one leaf open so far…

I never know what I’m going to fall for…and that’s half the fun. The other half? Watching the people who show up for this event, there are the ones that have been there before and know the program, and then there are the first-timers. It’s great people watching!

Going into this weekend I’m feeling quite plant rich, maybe even a little too rich. Maybe I don’t need more? On the other hand I’ve managed to plant up, weed out, and pass on several container specimens…so I’ve got more than a few empty pots…EMPTY! Must fill! To be continued…

If you’re local and curious here are the details:
Saturday May 19th and Sunday May 20th, 2012, from 11am to 4pm
11900 S. Criteser Rd., Oregon City, OR 97045

If you’re not local but curious you know I’ll be posting a follow up next week.

    1. I wonder how there offerings will look to you? I suspect a lot is probably more available in your area and not as "exotic" as it still is here.

  2. Ah, that's your secret! Reading your posts that show lots of your plants, here's what I usually think: "never heard of it... never heard of it.... never heard of it.... never heard of it... ooh, I know that one!... never heard of it... never heard of it... Agave... never heard of it..." You get the idea. :-)

  5. ohhh that is soo exciting!!! I have been debating on whether or not to attend the Pacific Northwest Palm and Exotic Plant Society annual plant sale this weekend. I feel like it could be a really dangerous endeavour... even if I intend on just "looking." I know I'm bound to fill my trunk full of all kinds of treasures. I can't wait to see photos from your visit to Rare Plant Research

  6. Do they sell anything hardy to our area? I don't have the discipline that you do with potted plants!

  7. Thanks for the heads up and the pep talk. If anything will get me there, this will. I am suddenly mad for Aloes, and have much better luck that with Agaves.

  9. I'm jealous of the color still on your Aloe dorothea - mine from RPR has reverted to green. I've had it in the house and it seems happy. Maybe if I put it out in the sun? Or maybe I just buy another, more colorful one this weekend...?

    1. Mine turned that color while still in the house under growlights. Weird huh? It was that color when I bought it last year, then over the summer turned green. Then around Christmas started to turn orange again. I agree though, your best bet is probably to buy at least one more.
