Time for a change in my garden…

We have officially just ended the wettest March EVER (or at least since they started keeping records) in Portland, Oregon …7.75 inches of rain fell during the last 31 days…it’s a wet soggy mess out there. And if you’re tempted to say “but the rain makes everything so green” just don’t. I’m over that, so over it.
So I’ve made a big decision, I’m tired of fighting Mother Nature…I’m revamping my entire garden into a bog garden, lots of Gunnera, Horsetail and the like. No more xeric sun loving plants. I’ll only be buying and planting those plants that like wet feet, or at least can tolerate them. Maybe a nice big water feature complete with a waterfall? At least I should finally have plenty frogs in the garden.

Ha ha ha… yes it is April 1st and this is an April fool’s joke. Well, the part about my garden…the rain part is nothing but the hard wet truth.

  1. Ha! Funny, but you'll have to try something else to get us on April Fools day. I didn't even have to read the last part to know it was joke. You love spiky plants way too much for that.

    1. Ya I figured everyone would just roll their eyes, but I hoped maybe I'd make you laugh!

  2. ...and we've just ended the dryest month in March records for where we live in Colorado. No joke. But, fortunately, my husband got to spend the better part of a couple of weeks in the Portland area. He was thrilled with the weather (that part about being thrilled IS a joke!).

    1. Seriously!? What's up with that...crazy climate change. I hope your husband brought (or bought) a rain jacket.

  3. Does that mean you wont be renaming your blog aqua garden?

  4. You almost had me! I mean, I envisioned the sunken patio filled in as a pond and Gunnera and reeds looking gorgeous in it. Then I, too, came to my senses...this is Loree of danger garden, posting!

I am no fan of all this rain either, and I join you in commiserating. Did you make it to the Lan Su sale? It was great, but incredibly wet and cold at 9:15 when I got there. I figured you cleverly waited until it dried up and warmed a bit!

    1. I did make it to the Lan Su sale, I was done and headed home by 9:30, we must have missed each other because of our rain gear. I had my hood up the entire time and was still wet! Of course once it dried up (and warmed up, it was cold at 9:15!!!) I was wishing I had waited, but the idea of missing out on something early was just too much for me. What did you buy? (I'll share my purchases tomorrow)

    2. 1) A tiny Rhododendron 'Shamrock" for the shady front; 2) Saxifraga dentata (x geum), which I fell for about five years ago; 3) Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana', because you can't have too much Mondo grass; and 4) a modestly-priced Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon'...finally!

    3. Soooo jealous! I want a Poncirus trifoliata "flying dragon" so very much!

    4. Oh I saw those 'Flying Dragons' and they looked good! Also I've got that Saxifraga and love it (except for it's silly flowers), I was going to see if I had enough to bring some to the plant exchange...

    5. I would happily take more Saxifraga if you feel like dividing it!

  5. You had me fooled. I marvel at how you manage with all those succulents when it is so wet. You clearly have the drainage down to a T.

    1. Yikes I wish that was the case. Some of the plants aren't looking so good.

  8. Haha...I wasn't fooled for a minute ;-) I've been going back and forth about the rain...there's nothing like going to sleep to the sound of rain...so soothing. I just wish it would be dry during the weekend so I could get a little more done!

    1. It's been years since I liked the sound of rain, now it just makes me anxious. Pathetic huh?

  9. Please send some of that rain our way. We are officially in drout now here in Kent.

  10. We had 6.68 for the month in Seattle. It may be time to rethink some aspects of my garden if this keeps up....at least the pond doesn't need filling :-)

    1. It's amazing isn't it? And not just the soft drizzle we're used to but actually gully washers!
