Walking with the dog…

When heading out on a dog walk I sometimes leave the house with a destination in mind, other times I just walk and let Lila lead where she wants to go. Sometimes I bring the camera, sometimes I don’t. Luckily on this walk I did, isn’t this Iris gorgeous? Here’s the planted with wild abandon house I first shared back in May Looking good! After all that we ended up at McMenamins Kennedy School, and as usual there was much to see. The sign actually says “No Dumping”… Like velvet! The xeric garden, my personal favorite. I made it in time to see the end of the Chilean flame tree/fire bush (Embothrium coccineum) blooms, beautiful! More blooms and blooms-to-be that I am unable to identify (because I can be rather bloom ignorant). I think this one’s Goat’s Beard (Aruncus dioicus)? A bloom heavy dogwood. Lovely Tetrapanax. Arisaema leaf. Schefflera taiwaniana above Rodgersia leaves (and a Euphorbia on the left). The south sidewalk… Gorgeous! More gorgeous… Who knew purple could look so good?

  2. Thank you, Lila: there are a lot of great plants and blooms in your neighborhood! I think the yellow flowers clustered on the stem in a puff are phlomis, and several of the almost-open blooms look like varieties of allium to me.

I'm beginning to think I need to get a small dog, if only to get me out walking and observing more regularly.

  3. I think you should bring that Iris home and call it 'Miss Haversham".

  5. Went to a housewarming party yesterday, and the hosts were describing plans to redo front yard with gravel and spiky plants. I am sending them your link, so expect another loyal fan or two.

  6. What a treat, both 'gardens' are looking great! Not bad destinations for routine dog walking :)

  8. Deb, you're welcome! It's a fun one, and I'll be sure to go back by every couple of months so ya'll can see it through the seasons.

MulchMaid, there really are...and I don't think of us as being a particularly "gardeny" neighborhood! This time of year I would be out and about anyway, having a dog has forced me to see more of the neighborhood during the ugly winter months...which does have it's benefits.

Barry, does that mean you don't like? (doesn't sound like a compliment).

scott, are you now??? I think that could be used to take advantage of you!

ricki, yay for that! Feel free to give them my email if they have any specific questions.

Mark and Gaz, true! Beats parking lots that's for sure.

Les, it's an odd year. My Hydrangea hasn't even started blooming yet!
