When a full parking lot is a good thing...

West Seattle Nursery is always worth a visit—so when I had an extra 20 minutes and was nearby, what the heck, I thought I would swing by. I failed to factor in that it was a Sunday afternoon in mid-June, and the sun was out. In other words, EVERYONE in West Seattle who wanted a plant (or two) was there. The parking lot was full. The street parking was all taken. Determined to visit, I circled the block looking for parking and that's when I saw this...

Before we look closely at those wooden figures, I wanted to share what looks to be a lovely front staircase, under construction.

But it's the figures that caused me to stop and take photos.

They're, well, unusual.

I wonder what the neighbors think?

Is that a fairy on the chimney?

The house looks to be in need of a little TLC, and that's a lot of windows!

I couldn't get a great shot of these two, but yes, the figure on the left does have breasts stacked three high.

The cement wall is impressive.

Another staircase...

I'll do my best to check back here on future Seattle visits, to see what progress—if any—has been made. *Edited 8/9/22 to add a link to a story Kris found and shared in the comments: Controversial wood sculpture destroyed in car crash.*

  1. Tough parking near the West Seattle nursery, especially on weekends. I know this house. I believe there were two additional carved figures on the corner of the property that are now gone; maybe the weather got to them, or possibly removed (a bit graphic perhaps). It's a "castle" under slow, decades long construction that always appear disheveled.
The bigger question: did you find a parking spot?

    1. I did! But I barely had anytime to look around as I had spent so much time gawking at the landscaping.

  2. Wow, definitely interesting, unique, beyond the norm. I'd love to meet these folks. Exactly what will you find in their backyard? Are the owners sixed-toed cats with three tails? A lizard man? You find the coolest gardens,Loree!!!!

    1. If I recall correctly, there wasn't really a backyard to speak of, it's all out front! Glad you enjoyed.

  3. That house and those walls demanded in-your-face art. Frankly they get high marks for doing what they want — and on a corner, no less.

  4. You have the most remarkable ability to stumble upon interesting gardens, Loree! I'm a little disappointed that the owner/artist didn't pop out of the house to fill you in but then that person is probably used to people bearing cameras taking photos. I found an article on an accident that felled the dragon outside the same house in 2020 here: https://www.westsideseattle.com/robinson-papers/2020/01/29/controversial-wood-sculpture-destroyed-car-crash

    1. I might have the ability to stumble upon these places, but you are a wizard with the online research. Nice find there with this story!

  5. Whew. Sculptures inspired by Frank Frazetta.

Wandering neighborhoods is fun and something I do every so often. You find the most mysteriously strange things.

    1. I had to look up Frank Frazetta, I see the similarity.

  6. One thing I love about that part of the world is tolerance for diversity in self-expression. As long as it does not harm others, anything should go IMHO. My thought was, if one carefully maintains one's house, there is not much time or resources for the really creative stuff, lol.

  7. Someone has a flare for fantasy. The statues are beautifully carved and definitely conversation pieces. I kind of like the 'unkempt' look of the property. The statues fit into it well.

    1. You're right, but I would love to see the staircase finished.

  8. Wow. I don't even know what to think. I looked at your photos twice. Still don't know what to think. That's a *good* thing.

I'd love to know who the homeowners are!
