This is the cactus...
Yes, it's time to share a couple of black and white photos from the archives, well, the archives that consist of photos Andrew has given me as gifts over the years. This one seems remarkable for the good times these four ladies are having standing in front of a saguaro.
When you turn the photo over you learn that the saguaro hurt one of them, but which one? My first thought was the lady in front, after all she's dabbing at a tear, but that could be a tear from laughter. Now look at the lady on the far left, in white. She is kind of wincing, and holding her hand. I guess it will remain a mystery...
When I was making up imaginative stories to go with my black and white photos (here, here, here) I kept trying to come up with one that did this woman justice, but I never did. White gloves and shoes. a hat, a small handbag—she was dressed for the occasion. But what was the occasion? There are no notes on the back of the photo, no indication where in the world she is. What would you say?

I love these vintage photos. I hope Andrew will find many more for you!

DeleteBack in the day, it didn't need to be a special event for women to wear gloves. I'm relieve and happy that one isn't obliged to anymore, unless an invitation from the queen of England is involved. Gone are the corsets, gloves, and in my own lifetime, the dreaded pantyhose too.

You're right of course, about the gloves. Oh and the pantyhose! Yes, I remember in my 20's working at Pier One Imports they were required, and it seemed you couldn't go a day without snagging them on the wicker. HATE them!
DeleteThe lady in white in the first photo DOES look the least happy to be there...My story with respect to the second photo would be: "He told me he was going to take me someplace special after church and I had imagined that would be out to lunch at that fancy restaurant in town." She looks like she's putting on a brave face on top of a moment of disappointment.
ReplyDeleteA brave face indeed! Like Andrew at a nursery...
DeleteMy story to go with the second photo is:
ReplyDeleteNo one will ever know Henry and that floozie are buried under the yucca. Ha! Best fertilizer I've ever used. (The gloves were to prevent finger prints--just in case.)
Perfect!
DeleteI agree with the first comment. She’s just dressed for leaving her house.
ReplyDeleteAnd now pajamas are worn in public...
Delete1. Schadenfreude? They probably told her not to play in the cactus and she didn’t listen.
ReplyDelete2. That is Mrs. Bucket, from Keeping Up Appearances, when she was younger. I am sure she has a very important position at that conservatory as head horticultural mistress or somesuch.
That should have been “headmistress of horticulture”
DeleteBut I want to be the Headmistress of Horticulture!
