Back in 2012, I wrote a blog post about my friend Patricia's garden and called it "
The garden where everything grows faster, bigger, and better than mine…." That was her old garden—since erased by new homeowners—but her "new" garden is definitely sticking with the theme. I recently visited, and one of several things I complimented her on was the amazing Symphytum × uplandicum 'Axminster Gold' she's growing...
She said it was inspired by my plant. You don't have to be a gardener to see there's a bit of a difference between the two. This is mine...
Hers...
Mine...
Ya. Who's inspired by who? Next year I vow to give my poor plant a little more water.

Ha! At the moment mine is not looking as good as yours. Not sure if it's ever looked as good as hers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the moral support.
DeleteWhat a beautiful plant. (I'm a sucker for variegated leaves.)
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous, each leaf so different.
DeleteYeah, garden envy– gets us every time!
ReplyDeleteNo doubt!
DeleteThe Symphytum's attractive, whatever its size, and both look healthy. There are sweet spots in every garden that provide just the right type of soil, the right amount of sun (or shade), and the right amount of moisture. I KNOW your garden offers those sweet spots for many, many plants.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct, thanks for the reminder.
DeleteThe beauty of balance speaks volumes. Simply lovely.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
DeleteWell. I got you on ONE thing. Mindy N. gave me the plant. It'd gotten unruly as heck earlier, so I cut it to the quick, and what do you know--it grew back better. Plants are amazing. Always fun to see my garden through your eyes. Cheers
ReplyDeleteI may have left it in the crazy flower stage too long this year... and the ankle thing obviously did my garden no favors.
DeleteYes to the water. Mine is once a week but it should probably be twice, and maybe more in July.
ReplyDeleteIn the past I've been sure to give it a good drink at least once a week. Not this year...
DeleteJust wait until I show you a photo of mine. You would laugh, and they you would feel pity for the poor thing. It's in the community garden, but got overshadowed by a bigger plant. If it makes it through the winter, I vow to move it next spring. Patricia's might be the gold standard to strive for, but I would feel successful if mine ever looked like yours.
ReplyDeleteAnd people get all nervous about comfrey taking over!
Delete"Inspired by" doesn't mean "equal". I get inspired by everything I see in gardens or read in blogs, but my attempts rarely resemble the original. Years ago, I fell in love with Actaea 'Black Negligee': saw it in the Bellevue botanical garden. Still woking on getting this plant to love me back... That variegated Symphytum is fabulous at any size. I'm inspired to get my own next year!
ReplyDeleteIt really is a great plant, I hope you do!
DeleteI should post a photo of mine. You'd feel much better about yours, LOL.
ReplyDeleteIn gardening, as in baseball: there's always next year!
