This is why. Three plants I purchased there on a whim—late in summer 2019— actually wintered over, here is one of them.
This is one of the "questionable" plants I purchased to build on the theme. Only $2.50, what's not to love? Well, as long as they're not allowed to bloom. Foliage only please!
Plus they went nicely with the Datura meteloides 'Double Lavender’...
The color was off in the above photo, this is better.
Of course by the time I got around to snapping an over all shot of the area the datura flowers had faded. But look! The the Astelia 'Silver Shadow' I purchased recently ended up here, it seemed to continue to color scheme rather nicely so in it went.
Now here's where I complain about Blogger, again. I took at great video of the sun dancing across this section of the garden which I tried to upload, but for some reason it simply wouldn't work. If you "like" my danger garden page on Facebook, or follow me on Instagram you can find it there. But here, well, you just get another photo of those damn begonias...

Nice vignette. The Datura and the begonias complement each other well. Have always loved the Rex begonias but have no luck with them in or out. You obviously have the touch.
ReplyDeleteWell at least for awhile, they're annuals here in a normal winter. Enjoying them while I can!
DeleteI do love those damn begonias :-D Some have the most spectacular foliage that could easily turn into an obsession.
ReplyDeleteSo "wintered over", as in outside? I wouldn't have thought it possible.
Outside! I cut a few leaves for a vase thinking they'd be dead for sure, but nope!
DeleteLoving this combination ! Stunning ! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Daisy!
DeleteSaw the video on Facebook. So lovely! You are lucky to be able to grow those begonias! I can't here in Phoenix with humidity that runs about 5-15% most of the year and temps even now at 115ยบ. The only type that work for me are angel wing begonias which I currently am keeping under lights until about November!
ReplyDeleteYes our climate is certainly more favorable to these plants, at least in the summertime. Your highs this summer have been harsh!
DeleteThey look great with the Datura! I love Rex begonias, far more believe or not than the begonias grown for their flowers. I grew these easily in a shady spot in my old garden but I believe they'd instantly incinerate if I tried planting them out like that in my current garden. However, I have accumulated quite a few in pots in my lath house.
ReplyDeleteI remember a few of those lath house beauties!
DeleteOMG, that Datura meteloides 'Double Lavender’ is gorgeous. I only have a patio (my "Concrete Jungle") but I know Datura's can be grown in large containers. I am definitely getting myself one of these!!!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with it! The flowers are mesmerizing.
DeleteThose are beautiful Begonias--enjoyed seeing the fancy-foliage type. They are difficult here because of the low humidity. Mine are the ordinary kind but it doesn't seem like a SoCal garden without begonias.
ReplyDeleteAnd how cool that you found a plant store that also sells food? :)
Ha! Right? So handy to be able to add some groceries to the plant purchases.
DeleteI love the colors and textures in this space. I end up killing every rex I try to grow. Summer is too humid and winter is too cold and dry, but I sure love seeing them.
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing our winter this year might be a little harsh, so these will definitely be one season wonders.
