What blows YOUR mind?

During our holiday trip to the Los Angeles area, Andrew was finally able to cross the La Brea Tar Pits off his list of "must-see" attractions. It was interesting, all that tar bubbling up from underneath the ground, talk of animals roaming the area and getting stuck. I especially enjoyed the large banners hung throughout, a small child who's mind was being blown, agave style...

They were part of the advertising campaign for the Natural History Museums of LA County, #MindBlownLA. More info here, random people's photos here. Fun.

  1. It's been a long time since my mind was blown. Sometimes I'm not sure there's a mind left in there to blow. That Agave mashup photo is great! What did you think of the LA Brea tar pits? I've heard they are less than impressive.

    1. Andrew was impressed, I was just along for the ride. It was all very interesting, just not really my thing.

  2. Like Alison, mind blowing events are few and far between. Except this tar pit post made me think that in another life, I would have been happy to be a paleontologist. Realizing this is mind blowing!

  3. My mind is constantly blown, and not always in a good way. The last good one was quite recently, at the Exquisite Creatures exhibit. And, the last bad one was.... well, yesterday, and ongoing. Sheesh... but enough about that. I love the Blown Mind shot above. So wonderfully appropriate for our madcap times.

    1. I haven't been to the Exquisite Creatures show but have seen a lot of photos. There's something about dead creatures arranged to be visually striking that kinda bothers me.

  4. I didn't know you could tour the La Brea tar pits. Sounds cool to see bubbling black goo. The young man in the banner thinks so.

    1. You can! Of course there is an entrance fee, but lots to explore.

  5. Cute! What I remember most about the tar pits is the smell but then I'm not sure I've been there since I was a kid. The tar pits are slated for a substantial redesign but, if they've announced a projected completion date, I've yet to hear of it. Andrew may have to put it back on his list...

    1. I was expecting a strong smell, but didn't really get it. I think the redesign has started, there were a few places blocked off with tall temporary walls, then again that might have been for LACMA next door.

  6. Embarrassingly, I lived in LA for a summer (and visited family several other times), but I never made it to the tar pits. Gotta get out there again (for so many reasons). The banners are certainly creative. As for blowing my mind...as life goes on, the little miracles blow my mind the most.
