The Japanese Garden lanterns, at Lotusland

The lecture portion of the 2019 Bromeliad Summit took place at Lotusland. The attendees met up in the parking lot and walked the long the main drive to what was Ganna Walksa's private residence, back in the day. Since the Japanese Garden was—at that time—undergoing a major renovation, they'd lined up all the stone lanterns along the drive.

It made quite the statement seeing them all here, like this. A very different experience from discovering them tucked into the foliage around the Japanese Garden.

I have to admit I appreciated them in a way I wouldn't normally. Now that the renovation is finished I'm sure they're tucked back inside the garden.

  1. An unusual experience being able to "compare and contrast" as it were. Some lovely examples.

    1. Exactly, had I been in a cataloging state of mind I would have take a lot more detailed images.

  2. I know they're supposed to be tucked into foliage to be discovered, but I really like them all massed together like this. There's something very satisfying about seeing them all neatly lined up.

    1. I agree, as nontraditional as it is it really helped me to appreciate the artistry.

  3. That is some collection. I love stone in general, and stone lanterns in particular; the Japanese garden style is very appealing to me. I favor the slightly less ornate designs but find them harder to come by.

    1. And to think...it isn't even the whole collection. The light in my first few photos was so poor I didn't use them.

  4. Their impact IS amplified by a display of this type. My local botanic garden has 3, 2 of which are partially hidden and I rarely do more than acknowledge their existence when I conduct tours.

    1. I recall overhearing a conversation between two Japanese garden loyalists who were aghast at the suggestion another garden visitor made that the lanterns should be displayed like this always.

  5. Thank you for sharing that. It's such great effect seeing them lined up along the drive. The power of showing a collection all together. It works for plants too.

    1. Great point, it's why an inventory of plants in little pots (like Jenny's "theatre") is so successful.

  7. They look beautiful all lined up, although they remind me of street lights. They would look pretty cool all lit at night.

  8. I have yet to post about my visit the day before yours I think. I took many photos of these lanterns as well. When I was there last year they had this drive blocked and I could only take photos from 'beyond the barricades' (forgive the musical theatre reference) and it was so great to be able to see them up close.
