Wednesday Vignette; one of these things is not like the others...

Surveying the cactus selection at the orange big box store I found a surprise. One of these things is not like the others.

A real flower in a sea of fakes.

I wonder how the plant managed to avoid getting a fake flower glued on too? Or maybe it did but another shopper before me pulled it off?

  1. That real flower is so joyous, the cactus looks like it's waving. Sigh. The real thing is so much more beautiful than those dried-up strawflowers. The one that really makes me sad is that monstrose cactus with the purple koosh-ball on it. I've had one of those for years and it has never flowered, but I doubt its flower looks like that.

    1. That purple koosh-ball was so funny/pathetic. It reminded me of a vintage ladies swim cap.

  2. Holy cow! That is appalling. Not the real flower, but the fact that the rest are fakes. Says a lot about American consumers. Or maybe just Americans in general.

    1. Yes! A little to the right was the display of painted succulents, even worse.

  3. Many years ago (before I knew better) I bought a cactus with a glued on strawflower thinking the flower was the real deal. Bit of a shock when I finally realized the thing was fake. A vile practice.

  4. I really hope you saved its life and brought it home with you. It is full of buds so would be blooming for a long time. Trichocereus? Lovely.

    1. I should have, but I did not. I'm trying to decrease my potted plant collection.

  5. Yes, how did the real flower escape? Even worse are the plants painted pink, blue, purple, etc. And we thought the glued-on straw flowers were bad...

    1. Agreed, and those were on offer just a few inches to the right.

  6. The real thing is so pretty and the cactuses are pretty darned interesting without the glued-on things. Wish they'd stop with the hot glue gun already!

    1. Me too, they're so much better left alone.

  7. Such a sad practice, and I cheer that one cactus for such a vigilant act of protest! It kind of made me think of current politics. (Mind you, just about everything these days makes me think of that.) We need more humans to do what that cactus just did. WTF is wrong with us??? We all need to flood the streets and release our closeted indignation. I know we have it in us... somewhere.

    1. I knew you'd find away to tie this into our sad state of affairs! (thank you)

  8. Really? They glue flowers on the plants? I guess I haven't visited a big box store in awhile (and now won't bother).

    1. Oh yes indeed! And have you seen the ones they paint? Yep, the whole plant. Cause everyone needs a shocking pink or purple succulent.

  9. I hate when they do that. Last visit to Lowes, I was horrified to see luridly spray-painted succulents. Oh yeah, they are going to live a loooong life when they can't breathe or photosynthesize. Shameful!

  10. So sad but it is for the people who like to have a flower for more than one day. I have been the happy recipient of several of those rejects on the Lowes sale table.
