Wednesday Vignette, Nerd Night plants

Here in the Portland area we have a long running late winter/early spring tradition called Nerd Night. Plant people gather, nursery owners talk dirty to us (you know, plants and pictures of plants) and sell us plants. It's great! This year's event took place last Friday night. I was tempted by a few choice Schefflera at the Far Reaches Farm booth, but managed to resist (no space!). My only plant purchase was this adorable pair of tiny (4" pot) Yucca gloriosa 'Bright Star' from N&M Nursery...

There was an Abutilon I really wanted at the Sebright Gardens booth, but another person grabbed it before I could. Now I'm on the hunt for it, Abutilon megapotamicum 'Paisley' it's pretty. Richie Steffan, of Great Plant Picks, spoke about a ground cover Lonicera that looked to be pretty special, I'm after it too now: Lonicera crassifolia. Nerd Night Friday and a talk from John Anderson, the Queen's Gardener, on Sunday...lots of planty action here in Portland last weekend!

  1. Sounds like a perfect planty weekend! How do they get their yuccas to blush like that? Mine seldom do and it's never as dramatic as the pink prettiness of your new twins. I love Lonicera crassifolia. I've had mine in a large pot for at least 8 years and it's grown SLOWLY to cascade over the sides to the ground. Grows in deep shade and perhaps that's why I've yet to see a bloom on it.

    1. I would have said cold temperatures but lord knows you've seen plenty of those. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Lonicera!

  2. Missed Nerd Night this year... Booh! We have that Lonicera at Joy Creek. It looks great draping down a wall or container too. No fragrance though - at least not that I can tell.

  3. 'Bright Star' in 4-inch pots! Incredible. While the price has come down some in the last couple of years, the best buy I've found was a 2-gallon for about $30. I really do feel as though I live in the wrong part of the country sometimes...

    1. If I told you I paid $8 for each of those would you still think it was a good thing?

  5. The plant sales up there are so enviable. But I'm coming to study weekend and the car will be full !

    1. Maybe I should warn the local nurseries to stock up...

  6. Take good care of the 'Star's--they are a bit frail (for a Yucca) at that size. Wonderful plant.

    1. I was beginning to think I was the only one who experienced this plant as week.

  7. Yes, like Anna said, we have L. crassifolia - I can bring you one if you wish. Sorry to have missed Plant Nerd Night! It's always a ton of fun.
