The Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Nanjing Gold' blooms have never lasted this long. Sadly, up until this week, it's been so cold their fragrance has largely been unnoticeable.
Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Akebono’ blooms are just starting to open.

I was tempted to ignore the hellebores this month, but since they're such a big part of what's still blooming I shot a few of them. Helleborus argutifolius

These cute little Iris reticulata ‘Pixie’ are almost done, but they still look great if you don't ask for a close-up.

ReplyDeleteYears ago I worked in a flower shop and all the roses were placed in the fridge overnight to make them last longer. Always looking for the silver lining, our frigid temperatures could explain the long blooming period of Edgeworthia 'Nanjing Gold'.
I have a 3" baby corsican hellebore. Can't wait for it to be 2' and in bloom.
Yes, the cold is what I'm attributing the unusual bloom time to.
DeleteYes, the combination of cold temperatures and being away all week led to me not bothering to do a bloom day post. Maybe I'll do a belated one tomorrow, if I can find anything. Thank goodness for Hellebores at this time of year.

DeleteSame story here for the Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Nanjing Gold'; it was in bloom stronger and longer than ever, but too cold out for the scent to carry. Finally this week, as the flowers are on their way out, it warmed up enough for the fragrance to waft. Wow! So sweet! Last winter everything in the sheltered "winter garden" flowered at once -- sweet box, vernal witch hazel, winter honeysuckle, and the Edgeworthia -- which made it impossible to pick out the paperbush's scent in the intense but pleasant medley of vanilla/clove/lemon/sugar. It turns out to be the sugar...

DeleteRepeat or not, I admire all your blooms, particularly Grevillea miqueliana, which I've yet to find locally. I also wish Hellebores did half as well here.
