Wednesday Vignette, why so green?

Leaving a private garden visit last summer I noticed this across the street. One lawn was so green, the other lawn was kinda brown and splotchy. Then I realized the green lawn was fake.

Cleverly disguised as real with weeds, real weeds!

The real lawn's weeds weren't nearly so lush.

  1. Hah! That's pretty real-looking, fake grass. I don't know if it was cleverness, or just laziness, to let weeds seed in around the edges.

  2. I have a hard time using the word "fake" in a sentence these days, so I'll call the greener pasture "artificial". They sure make it look good and real, especially in comparison to the turf across the path.

    1. Excellent point, I'm surprised my fingers were able to type that word.

  3. Artificial lawns have come a long way in the last few years. This one looks pretty good, weed disguise and all.

  4. Wow, very real-looking, I'm surprised. I'd still prefer a natural lawn, all the same.

  5. Sorry, I just spent all of Saturday listening to speakers from around the country talk about the "resilient landscape" and how we need to garden to deal with climate change and support the environment etc. So I this is not funny to me but shocking, undemocratic and anti-environmental. Yeah, I know this is cranky but reading about flooding forecasts for 23 of the lower 48 states this spring, does not make me think kindly of anyone who has artificial turf unless it will absorb twice as much rainwater as a garden or even a regular lawn.

    1. I have not yet read a study on the manufacture or life span of artificial turf...I am curious.

  6. I've had the same experience. A couple of real weeds is all that's needed to give a high-quality artificial lawn some street cred.

  7. Funny, I was just in a neighborhood today where there were plenty of expanses of the new and improved varieties of Astroturf. I mean, they do look pretty good, but when I realized what they were, I felt oddly like I had been somewhat cheated... Kind of funny to see the weeds thriving under the woven and knotted plastic cover.

  8. Fake turf is environmentally hostile to make, has a relatively short lifespan and in a climate with real winter looks ridiculous when all around has faded to tan. It looks particularly impressive when the utilities spray paints it in lovely shades of pink and orange. Better alternatives to use than this.

  9. We have friends who installed the artificial stuff. It required great restraint to remain polite as the unveiling progressed. Verbal gymnastics succeeded in redirecting the conversation.
