Wednesday Vignette, cement block ruins

Every winter Portland Nursery does a big conifer display at the back of their entry courtyard. It showcases a nice selection of seasonally appropriate plants and hides the rest of the (empty) nursery. It's always well done, but this year was extra fab. They created a sort of "ruins" out of cement blocks, blocks I"m sure they had just laying around the nursery...
It was a dreary day, which actually probably added to the ambiance, although I would never say no to a blue sky.

Isn't it fun?

  1. Someone missed their architectural calling! Or maybe craves the lego blocks of childhood. Either way, this is great fun. Dreary and January appropriate. Love that "leaf figure" on the sphere.

  2. Oh, that is well done! Like right out of the jungle with all those ferns.... I like how the water seemingly spouts through the cracks - very fun!

  4. Impressive what creative people can create with something as common as cement blocks! This is incredible. Too bad it can't stay permanently & grow a little moss. I suppose that a nursery full of plants will make up for the loss of the ruin.

    1. Yes, the ruin can live on in my memory, the plants however...I want them back asap!

  5. Brilliant! The water streams are well done, but would be a lot more appealing on a sunny day. (Bright white labels visible on the black plastic pots seriously mar the overall effect; just rotate them out of sight, guys.)

    1. Pesky customers may have had something to do with that...

  6. I'm suitably impressed! Years ago I tried to convince a friend to go with a ruins look in her backyard but she wasn't buying it (even if it did fit her "casual" gardening style).

    1. I tend to think ruins in a private garden look a little contrived, unless you've got acres and they can be in a hidden area that you "stumble upon"...

  7. Yes, nicely done and very creative! It shows how much can be done simply, and on a budget--with a little planning and muscle. I really like this!

  8. Lots of fun! I really like it. As Beth says above, it shows how much can be done with an open mind (and a not-too-open wallet.)
