Wednesday Vignette, amputate!

Modern art?

No, I'm afraid not. This should give you a better idea what the blemishes are.

Here's the scar (at "ground" level). This poor mistreated Agave americana has been in this container too long. It get's no cover from our winter rains, that amputated arm was heavy with absorbed moisture. I love Agaves but I also mistreat them...

  1. Surgically removed... how do you even get your hand it there to make a clean cut... (very carefully?) At least you revealed two pups available and unblemished for next summer.

    1. Very carefully and with gloves. I used a serrated knife.

  3. What winter rains? (Just kidding...) Seriously, for being in a container, I think it has fared pretty well. And, you're right - selectively framed like you did in that first photo, it's gangrenous state really DOES look quite decorative!

    1. I know we're not quite up to normal, but it's been plenty wet out there.

  4. I'm calling in a report to plant parenthood. That's a familiar sight for those folks crazy enough to grow agaves in our climate. Is it better for the plant to amputate the rotting arms or is it an aesthetic issue?

    1. Both, and since we had a run of dry days I decided it was time.

  5. Was thinking same as Linda! Great modern art photo. : ) And this guy is lucky to be in your garden. He looks pretty happy in-spite of his blemishes.

    1. He needs a new home where he can stretch out...

  6. I've been watching fungal problems attack a couple agaves after the last heavy rains, 4" in a couple days, and today I bit the bullet and accomplished my first agave coring on a variegated schidigera. With more heavy rain predicted, I figured why not, since the rain will only make the problem worse. I haven't decided yet on the fate of A. parrasana 'Fireball'...

  7. Here, it's sun scorch. You do what you can but you can't protect them from everything.

    1. Oh I know that one all too well, it's the curse of bringing the basement prisoners out into the light in the spring.

  9. It's protecting its pups very nicely. Scars and spots, the price of parenthood?
