Brookside Gardens ("an intricately designed public garden on 50 acres") was another 2017 Fling stop where I didn't manage to snap many photos. Except for this...
The meadow bits and the Nassella tenuissima were magic. Especially now, in January. This vignette just screams summer warmth to me....

I was so caught up with the butterflies I missed the opportunity to take in most of the garden. I never even saw this meadow area so thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteBut you enjoyed the butterflies right? So all was not lost.
DeleteBecause this has "Mexican" in its name, I've always ignored it as not hardy here. But your photos made me look it up and apparently it is Zone 5. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteYay! It's a good one.
DeleteThe silvery seed heads of Nassella tenuissima really light up the meadow!
ReplyDeleteIndeed they do.
DeleteI love a big stand of frothy feather grass, so thanks for sharing your photos!
ReplyDeleteI remember now, this was the day you stayed at the hotel wasn't it?
DeleteI LOVE Mexican feather grass. Anyone with a large garden (better yet, a meadow) would love it's reseeding ability. It is absolutely a sight when gently moving in the breeze.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I've had no issues with it reseeding into my gravel in the front garden? Even though I would be happy for it to.
DeleteDid you visit the National Arboretum?
ReplyDeleteSadly no. It wasn't in the Fling itinerary and we had no time on our "extra" days.
DeleteIt doesn't have as good a reputation in Mediterranean climates. Its a thug and invasive weed here in California, but some still plant it even knowing its ability to escape and cause problems.
ReplyDeleteI've seen it try to be a thug here in Portland, but the climate just manages to keep it in check.
