Here we are, back at the Kuzma Garden. I ended yesterday's post just as we were approaching this section of the garden, one of my favorites...
I'm sure you can guess why: monster Agave ovatifolia!
My phone for scale...
So so so gorgeous.
And this! Leucadendron argenteum
It's not hardy here in Portland, but John does find a way.
His large Acacia baileyana 'Purpurea' either perished in our horrid 2016/17 winter and was replaced, or was severely cut back and has regrown from the base. I forgot to ask which.
The patio cover (slanted root visible over the palm) must make for lovely rainy afternoon drinks in the garden.
Of course I had to admire the fountain/water feature.
Another favorite focal point of mine.
I do love an understated Canna flower.
And a pop of Alstroemeria color.
(okay...but I couldn't decide which photos not to include, so I included them all..)
Moving on now...
Melianthus major 'Antonow's Blue' or 'Purple Haze' — I think it's 'Purple Haze'.
Lush! So very lush...
Caesalpinia gilliesii
The Agave crevice garden...
Many of the Agaves were hit hard by Portland's ugly winter. Luckily quite a few survived.
Abutilon 'Red Tiger'
Leonotis leonurus had gone a little crazy, in a good way.
I must remember to track this one down come spring.
Cunninghamia lanceolata 'Glauca' (I think).
Heading back towards the house and lower garden.
Variegated Daphniphyllum
One of only three I know of here in Portland.
And the first one I ever saw.
That's a wrap on this visit, time to go relax with friends and a glass of wine (that's Mark, Gaz and John having a chat)...

What a thrilling garden. It is not often that one finds all that exuberance and hidden paths in a garden that also has dramatic open space. Brilliant design to say nothing of the plants. How nice to be able to have visited it multiple times. And thanks for putting your phone in the photo for scale!
ReplyDeleteThe garden design was done by Sean Hogan, of Cistus nursery. He did a brilliant job. John has kept up the garden moving forward with editing and additions. A great combination!
DeleteOne of the best things about the Kuzma garden (IMHO) is the way the plants are just integrated into the open spaces. I love the way they just sort of "spill" into the "patio" area in the backyard close to the house, and those yellow (Oenothera?) flowers punctuate the interface. And I need a new Leonotis leonurus, too. Mine perished last winter so let me know if you spot it first!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right Jane, and as the palms put on height their placement (dotted randomly throughout the garden) gets better and better. Hortlandia usually has a few Leonotis, if I remember correctly at the HnM Herb Nursery booth?
DeleteAlways great to see this garden again. Let's keep this annual update tradition!
ReplyDeleteIt already is!
DeleteSuch a magnificent place. I'm glad his agaves fared well through last winter's hell, that's good to see. One of the most picturesque gardens from the Garden Blogger's Fling.
ReplyDeleteA few Agaves went to spiky plant heaven, but the ones that survived are looking grand indeed.
DeleteThe plants, the company, the awesome garden...Heaven!
ReplyDeleteAll that was missing was you!
DeleteIts hard to look away from the water feature, it's wonderful. I didn't know canna grows in water like this. It has a beautiful and elegant bloom.
ReplyDeleteThe bloom on that Canna is so perfect, I’m going to have to get a name so I can buy a couple.
DeleteThis is a true collector's garden and each specimen looks perfect. Every time I see that Leucadendron argenteum I want one but it gets huge!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could stunt it’s growth in a container?
DeleteI wish my Cunninghamia lanceolata 'Glauca' looked like that. It's got a touch of winter bronzing at the moment. It grew 2 feet after I moved it to its current location, but barely grew two inches last year. Hopefully it will get back on track this year.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for your Cunninghamia!
DeleteSo much to drool over! Fabulously lush <3
ReplyDeleteIt is so lush, I feel fortunate to have spent so much time there.
DeleteI love this garden so much. Sadly it looks like the crevice garden agaves took a big hit compared to your shot from last year: http://www.thedangergarden.com/2017/01/kuzma-garden-tour-2016-version.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+DangerGarden+(danger+garden).
ReplyDeleteWinter 2016/17 was one for the record books here, and yes... this garden (the Agaves in particular) was hit hard. I’m just thankful they weren’t all wiped out.
DeleteIt's a jungle out there. Only it is prettier than any jungle I have seen. I love the shots of color through out.
ReplyDeleteThere’s since been a greenhouse added, so you can enjoy the jungle year round!
DeleteAlways a treat to see that marvelous garden!
