In a Vase on Monday; Hellebore, Scabiosa and friends... plus seedlings!

Just a single little arrangement on the mantle this week for Cathy's "In a Vase on Monday" meme...

The insane wind broke a stem of Helleborus x 'Golden Sunrise'...so when the world gives you lemons...

It joined a few cut stems from our local New Seasons Market. The different faces of Scabiosa...

It's color worked with the Hellebore flowers perfectly.

And I love how different each one was, the stages all so unique.

They were joined by some of that cool thing with the green balls that I can't remember the name of (dammit)...

Anybody able to ID this? Berzelia! (thanks Anon)

Another shot of the Hellebore stem. I suppose one nice thing about it breaking was that since the flowers are past their prime, and starting to form seeds, they actually last quite awhile in a vase.

Hopefully (fingers crossed, salt tossed, wood knocked) I'll be sharing more vases with Scabiosa in the staring roll...

I started seeds of both these types a few weeks ago. They've both germinated successfully (that's something else in the second tray, Bomarea sp. (Orange flowering), seeds from my plant...we'll see, I just sowed them last week).

But I'm still waiting for the "true leaves" to break through.

This one is trying.

Come on little guys!

When not luxuriating in the sun of the driveway (we've had a couple warm days) they're hanging out in the backseat of my car. Good light, they're not assaulted by insane rainstorms, and they stay a little warmer. It's a mobile greenhouse...

I've also got several Zinnia seeds to plant, when the weather warms.

I got a bee in my bonnet last week and was going to plant them, but smart Facebook friends warned me to wait a few weeks (we're still unseasonably cold here). Just as well, I've got Agave pups to plant out and get to rooting.

Lots of them!

  2. What? You're planting seeds? Who are you and how did you hijack danger's blog? What a brilliant idea using the car as a greenhouse. I'm rooting for them (and you).

    1. Thanks Alison. They're this years experiment. Since the Zinnia seeds were so successful last year I decided to try something completely different. Of course I had to go and pick something that it seems nearly everyone has difficulty with.

  3. Your mobile greenhouse is perfect! Plant-crazed people find the most interesting solutions. The new scabiosa are fun and those green ball thingies are really groovy!

  4. I can't stop laughing about the seeds growing in backseat of your car! Not that it's not a clever plan - it definitely is! - but it shows the lengths to which a devoted gardener will go. Today's vase is a beautiful, and typically unique, creation. Those scabiosas are wonderful!

    1. Thanks Kris, the seeds might actually get to vacation in the sunlight today, the forecast looks promising.

  5. Those red scabiosa are stunning. And what a match with the Hellebore. I need to do more reading to figure out if it's possible to use Hellebores as cut flowers in their early stages before they start going to seed. They are so beautiful I'd like to use them more than I do.

  6. Yes, the scabious are gorgeous - such intriguing flowerheads. I too have sown S stellata and Black Night, but germination was poor on both :(, and have just started various zinnia off too as last year I started them in May but they did not have a long enough growing season and I had very few flowers. Sometimes you ust have to sow or plant out intuitively, I think

    1. You too? I've been told those Scabiosa are difficult. I'm starting to think I need to start the Zinnia too, it was 37F this morning, I fell like we're never gonna warm up!

  9. Brilliant idea to use your car as a greenhouse. I've got to get a move on and get my seeds started, we're not frost-free for another 6 weeks, but it is time!

  10. I love that Scabiosa! I have also sown some, but I think it was a bit too early for them as they have gone a little straggly. The car as a greenhouse is such an ingenious idea!

  11. Great idea on the rolling green house! :)
Congrats on your seed starting. I buy so many seeds and get hit or miss germination and occasional damping off, but I guess I never take is seriously because of the low monetary investment. I think my life is full of first-world problems.....

  12. Greenhouse Mobile!!! Love it. I developed Black Scabiosa envy; maybe too late for seed starting this year, but I'll have to try next year.

  13. Oh so wonderful to see how gardeners can be imaginative enough to use the back seat of a car as a propagating area! Do you give your seedlings little day trips to keep them perky? Lovely hellebore colour - but I was particularly struck by your pictures showing the wonderful wavey sepals on the scabious. Also - your seed compost looks great! Do you make it yourself?
