My very Potted Christmas...

I cannot imagine being in the Los Angeles area and not visiting Potted, luckily we had time to eke out a quick visit. We parked on the street, in front of the shop and under this huge Ceiba (Chorisia) speciosa...

Andrew spotted the birds right away, but it look me longer, they were so well camouflaged with the fruits...

Love those spikes.

Okay, time to shop!

Since our visit was just 3 days before Christmas there were apologies from the staff that things were so picked over. Evidently lots of lucky gardeners were going to be getting gifts from Potted for Christmas...

Euphorbia clandestina

Sonchus canariensis

You saw the City Planter in white in Denise's garden, here's the rust version...along with an Orbit Planter.

I've never been tempted to add an outdoor carpet to my patio, however if I were to do so these colors would be perfect!

The baby's head planter has become almost passé, add a couple of glass "daggers" and it's all new again.

Have I mentioned how much I enjoyed the sunshine and warmth on this trip? This photo brings it all back to me.

And this photo was included to remind myself to look into a plumbing pipe hanging structure for cool containers. There's an idea at work here...

Love how they're displayed.

I spy a Hover Dish Planter!

Now we're inside their recently expanded, and 10 year old, shop...

I'm stealing this idea! Heavy duty gift wrap (or wallpaper?) used as a table runner. They sold rolls of this, had we been driving, and not flying, I might have grabbed one.

Would it be odd for someone who has no kids to buy this? I've loved it ever since I saw it on YHL.

Oh yes! The top one is the larger version of a note card I bought at Flora Grubb last fall (and later framed). I love the bottom one too, even though I have no idea what it's supposed to be (aloe flowers with a euphorbia?)...

For being "picked over" there is still an amazing amount of good stuff here!

Love both of those prints too (on the left), and the Jack Planter, and the Bauer Biltmore, and the, and the, and the...(I could go on and on).

So what did I buy? Nothing.

Why? Because before we left on our trip I got to open my Christmas gifts, from Andrew, and he'd shopped at Potted (online). I am now the proud owner of a chartreuse Circle Pot. It's hanging out on our mantle for now...

And a pair of tea towels from Skinny laMinx.

It was a very Potted Christmas...

  1. Potted has such great stuff! Your new chartreuse circle pot looks perfect on your mantle! That Andrew fellow is a great gift buyer! Still love the baby head planters but I prefer to use actual knives, those glass things are just too pretty. That way, I always know where my weeding knives are. Merry sunny potted Christmas!

  3. I am hoping to find something there in May that will be portable enough to bring home on the train...hmm, maybe I should bring an empty suitcase with us? I see a lot here that I'd love to have. They have a lot of those hanging octopus planters!

    1. I bet they'd ship for you, since they do mail order. But I do like your empty suitcase idea.

  4. Those darn birds ... they are sooooo noisy. They squawk. These are yellow-chevroned parakeets. Wild and self-sustaining. Parrots have squared off tails while parakeets have long pointed ones. There are many kinds growing wild here, but these are partial to the silk-floss trees.

In the pic with the orange hover dish, I covet the house number and accompanying plaques. And I think I could not pass up the balancing cactus. What fun!

    1. I think that's how Andrew spotted them, the squawking. Do I see a trip to Potted in your future?

  5. Very nice gifts from Andrew there Loree! They have some seriously cool things in there but what's also commendable is how they stage their wares which are inspirational in their own right

    1. Indeed, the store is so well put together it's a treat to wander around and get ideas.

  6. Love those long "canoe" planters toward the end of the post. There aren't enough options for long, narrow planters in the world I think.

Also, my first thought with the balancing cactus was: fractals! I want the adult set of these where the pieces keep getting smaller and smaller, down to rice grain size. *That* would be amazing.

    1. I agree (the canoes), I've been enchanted with them for years and was lucky enough to score an original at an antique shop awhile back. Of course that doesn't stop me from wanting one of these.

Did you just think up an amazing woodworking project for yourself? Sounds pretty darn cool.

  7. Your scored! I bought a friend one of the octopus pots and am still regretting that I didn't get one for myself.

  8. Andrew knows you very well, doesn't he?

I love the rusted steel version of the City Planter. In fact, I love all those rusty metal planters. One of these days...

  9. I remember those tentacle pots from a trip to Valley Nursery. I still like them. As for the balancing cactus toy, who says a child's toy can't be repurposed as a fun, changeable sculpture? I want the Sansevieria to the right of the blue chairs.

    1. Nice spot on the sansevieria! I've been noticing quite a few cool ones of those lately (did you see Gerhards post? http://www.succulentsandmore.com/2014/12/two-tucson-nurseries-that-rockand-rain.html)

  12. Those canoe shaped containers? We had similar 50 years ago, still here somewhere. Glad to see they are back in style even if the colors are avocado and white, all wrong for today..

    1. I managed to find one of those originals in white, and LOVE it. White and avocado are my indoor pottery colors so if you ever run across yours and want to unload them just let me know!

  14. Go Andrew! I still don't know how you left without buying anything, even after getting those great gifts! Was the story around those dolls true? I don't think buying that wooden toy would be weird at all, it'd make a great ornament. And speaking of outdoor rugs, I got one the other day that's very bright, just for a bit of fun. It's plastic though, not sure what the one in the picture is. It definitely would've suited your scheme!

    1. Maybe because we were heading to the Huntington after this and I was sort of preoccupied with the idea of wandering around the desert garden for 4 hours? I don't know, but you're right. I really should have picked up that toy. And I think the rug is a woven plasticy material.

  18. Wow, I'll have to check out that place next time I'm in L.A.! Lots of character there. I need a pot like that for my Tillandsia. It's amazing how the birds were camouflaged in that tree.
